Applications are invited for the above temporary full time post working in the Public Health Collaborating Unit in the School of Health Sciences at Bangor University (Wrexham Technology Park, Wrexham).

The Public Health Collaborating Unit is a public health/academic collaborative funded by Public Health Wales which provides a flexible and efficient resource for rapid assessment, evaluation and policy development support to serve Public Health Wales and the wider NHS.

The post holder will work in collaboration with the Public Health Economics and Value team (Policy and International Health Directorate at Public Health Wales) on a joint project with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Comprehensive Immunization Special Program (CIM) on the social value of immunization. The post holder will be required to support the interpretation of health economics data and information in the context of Social (Public) Value to build a Well-being Economy in Wales.

The successful candidate will have a A PhD in a relevant subject (health, public health or other scientific, psychological or sociological subject), or be near completion and have have a research background in relevant area (e.g. social sciences, public health, health economics).

The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as possible, and the post is available until 31st March 2026, with the possibility of extension if additional funding is secured.

This role will be located on campus at Wrexham. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Public Health Wales is the national public health agency in Wales and exists to protect and improve health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities for people in Wales and beyond. Recognising its national and international role, expertise and achievements, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated a WHO Collaborating Centre on ‘Investment for Health and Well-being’ (WHO CC) at Public Health Wales, focusing on taking forward a sustainable early intervention, people-centred, long-term investment approach across sectors and organisations.

The Public Health Collaborating Unit (PHCU), hosted by Bangor University, links directly into the WHO CC and aims to respond to emerging needs for academic support in line with Public Health Wales’ strategic priorities:

• Influencing the wider determinants of health

• Promoting mental and social well-being • Promoting healthy behaviours

• Delivering excellent public health services

• Supporting a sustainable health and care system

• Tackling public health effects of climate change

The Project

The post will provide research support to a programme of work being implemented by the Public Health Collaborating Unit; a Public Health/Academic collaborative funded by Public Health Wales. The post holder will be part of the School of Health at Bangor University and based in their academic offices in Wrexham.

The post-holder will support a systematic literature review, quantitative analyses, and report and paper writing as well as preparing meetings and workshops.

The work plan will be led by Dr Kat Ford (Researcher) at Bangor University, and Anna Stielke (Senior International Evidence and Policy Officer) and Brendan Collins (Head of Economics and Modelling) at Public Health Wales.

Purpose of the Job

The post is part of an established team working on a joint project with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Comprehensive Immunization Special Program (CIM) on the social value of immunization.

The researcher in the Public Health Collaborating Unit (PHCU) will provide research support to the WHOCC across two strands of the work programme:

1. Establishing the evidence base: evidence review;

2. Building a definition of Value-Based immunisation: questionnaire; and

3. Social Value scoping and assessment.

The work forms part of Public Health Wales’s on-going collaboration with the WHO, aligned to the WHOCC Work Plan and the Memorandum of Understanding between Welsh Government and WHO Europe. It contributes to strengthening the role of Wales in the WHO through developing and sharing solutions and expertise and will serve as a ‘proof of concept’ by applying novel economic and social value approaches to impact assessment and measuring value and stakeholder engagement that brings co-benefits to Public Health Wales, the Welsh population, and globally. The collaboration will support organisational capability and capacity building in novel cross-disciplinary areas of research and practice.

The post holder will be responsible for the write up of a series of reports of the study findings.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Gathering and analysis of data. This may include study selection / data extraction / quality assessment.

• To support the research team in the analysis of quantitative data. This may include data management / data coding / data analyses / preparation of tables and figures for research outputs.

• Delivering research outcomes. This may include supporting the production of reports and journal publications / preparing materials for presentation to conferences / liaising with external providers for design and translation of research outcomes / working with partners to disseminate results / write final reports.

• Administration of the research project. This might include participate in project meeting / coordinate project to meet aims and objectives / liaise with stakeholders (external and internal) / preparing reports for funders.

• Other duties and responsibilities specific to the role include establishing information management processes and the management of sensitive information.

Qualifications/Training

Essential:

• A PhD in a relevant subject (health, public health or other scientific, psychological or sociological subject).

• Research background in relevant area (e.g. social sciences, public health, health economics).

Experience/Knowledge

Essential:

• Significant demonstrable experience leading to highly developed specialist knowledge in research applied to public health (evidence synthesis and quantitative analysis) including health economics and related concepts such as Well-being Economy and social value

• Experience of playing a leading role in a major research project.

• Proven track record of publications (academic articles or stakeholder reports).

• Proven track record of conference or workshop presentations.

• Experience of work in public health in an international academic setting.

Desirable:

• Experience of securing research funding through a competitive process.

Skills/Abilities

Essential:

• Skills in using a range of quantitative data collection methods.

• Demonstrate excellent analytical skills, ability to undertake complex analysis of quantitative data and present results appropriately including the ability to select and interpret a range of statistical tests.
