Deputy Care Home Manager (Registered Nurse)

Pembroke House is a purpose-built care home for veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in Gillingham. We have been serving Royal Navy and Royal Marines veterans and their dependants for over 70 years. Our residents and staff enjoy a varied yet familiar way of life to encourage independence and give each day meaning and purpose. The home has a ‘family-run’ feel and we have carefully created a supportive, friendly and close-knit team, making it a unique and very special place to work.

The Job Role

The role is to actively support the Home Manager in providing effective leadership across all service functions, including administration, care, catering, housekeeping, laundry, wellbeing, and maintenance. It also involves deputising for the Registered Manager in their absence, ensuring continuity of service and upholding the decisions and direction set by them.

The postholder is expected to maintain professional competence by keeping skills up to date through training and development as required, and to manage the service in line with agreed standards, legislative and regulatory requirements, best practice guidelines, and the financial parameters agreed with the Registered Provider. At all times, the wellbeing and best interests of service users must remain the highest priority.

The post holder will be a Registered Nurse and hold and maintain a valid NMC registration.

Pembroke House operates 365 days a year and so the postholder may be required to work across any 7 days of the week, sometimes at unsociable times and at night.

Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • The Deputy Manager will play a vital role in supporting the Registered Manager and ensuring the smooth and effective running of the Home. This includes acting at all times as a role model in the delivery of person-centred care, consistently demonstrating the values of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust (RNBT).
  • Deputising for the Registered Manager during periods of absence, and participating in the on-call rota and emergency cover provision, which may include night shifts.
  • A thorough understanding of safeguarding requirements is essential
  • Provide leadership, be a visible and accessible presence across the Home, leading on training, compliance, and induction for all new staff.
  • Ensure that all staff receive formal supervision and appraisals, and that recording systems and organisational documentation are maintained to a high standard.
  • The role requires active involvement in investigations and disciplinary hearings, the organisation of regular staff meetings, and the ongoing monitoring of daily routines through direct observation.
  • Carry out pre-admission assessments and coordinate new admissions to the Home.
  • Oversee the duty rota, ensuring that staffing levels and skills meet operational requirements
  • Strong communication will be central to the role.
  • Coordinate and, where appropriate, chair staff, Service User, and relative meetings, while also attending management meetings.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of training programmes, ensuring that staff development needs are met and the training provision is regularly evaluated.
