Casual Caretaker

At our Ammanford Campus, the learning activity on the Ammanford campus is focused on health, social and childcare as well as construction industry crafts. The construction section delivers courses in bricklaying, plumbing, plastering, painting, decorating, electrical installation and woodtrades.

The role of Caretaker plays a vital part to ensure the smooth and efficient day to day operation of the campuses in order to provide our learners and staff with the best possible learning environment to fulfil their potential. Caretakers are an integral part of the college team.

The position of Caretaker in Coleg Sir Gâr offers an interesting and varied role for a person who has the appropriate skills, enthusiasm, flexibility and a positive approach to work. It is a demanding and physical role with a significant amount of time spent actively walking around buildings and the sites.

An “on call” rota system (Monday to Sunday) is operated on all campuses in order to ensure there is cover for emergency call outs. Attendance on site for alarm activation call outs or any other emergency is a fundamental condition of employment.

In addition, weekend work maybe required.

Key Responsibilities

The Caretaker will be expected to:-

  • Ensure the security of the premises together with its contents; including key holder responsibilities and the operation of security alarm systems.
  • Operate heating and lighting systems on campuses. Training and full instruction will be given on the operation of the computerised heating and hot water control systems. Checks to be undertaken to ensure all systems are functioning correctly and that room temperatures are maintained. Report any defects / issues immediately to Campus Manager. Training will be provided.
  • Conduct weekly fire alarm tests and update record checklists.
  • Conduct weekly checks of fire doors and other external doors, update record checklists and ensure all doors are kept clear.
  • Check firefighting equipment on a regular basis and ensure that all exit doors are kept clear.
  • Assist Campus Manager / Assistance Campus Manager on evacuation of campus.
  • Undertake water hygiene monitoring (legionella water testing) on a regular basis, to comply with Legislation, noting findings on record sheets and advising Line Manager immediately of any abnormal readings. Training will be provided.
  • Take regular meter readings of electric, gas and water supplies.
  • Empty waste bins and ensure all bags are located at appropriate areas for collection by appointed refuse collectors.
  • Ensure waste is stored correctly on site and waste compound areas are kept in good order.
  • Assist the College with recycling of items and materials on site. The College has successfully retained the Level 5 Green Dragon Environmental Standard award for the past 4 years and the excellent recycling practices of the College have contributed significantly towards this achievement.
  • Undertake periodical room checks on fixtures and fittings and complete relevant documentation.
  • Ensure toilet facilities function at all times and free of blockages.
  • Order, via Campus Manager, personal hygiene requirements and ensure correct storage and distribution of supplies on campus.
  • Ensure cleanliness of outdoor areas including smoking shelters, removal of rubbish, stones, glass, paper, etc.
  • Maintain boiler houses in a clean and tidy condition.
  • Ensure that no combustible materials are left in inappropriate areas and encourage good housekeeping throughout the campus.
  • Periodical clearing of gulleys and troughs as directed by the Estates Department.
  • Assist with grounds maintenance work as directed by the Estates Department.
  • Draw the attention of the Estates Department via the Campus Manager/Assistant Campus Manager to any repairs or maintenance work required at the premises, which is beyond the caretaking staff.
  • Carry out minor maintenance and repairs to buildings, fixtures, fittings and equipment which is not beyond the scope of a tradesperson.
  • Replace light bulbs, tubes, starter fittings etc.
  • Carry out redecoration / painting of areas as directed by the Estates Department.
  • Direct workmen, contractors and visitors to relevant areas on site.
  • Use college vehicles as and when required for various duties including taking vehicles for servicing, MOT’s, repairs, replacement tyres etc. A minibus driving assessment will have to be undertaken.
  • Undertake weekly checks of college vehicles and record checklists.
  • Clean college vehicles as requested by Campus Manager.
  • Assist with traffic management control and monitoring
  • Set up rooms as required by Campus Manager/Assistant Campus Manager.
  • Undertake porterage duties.
  • Report to Campus Manager/Assistant Campus Manager immediately any damage to property or any defects to facilities.
  • Notify the Campus Manager/Assistant Campus Manager of any actual or potential health and safety issues
  • Perform all duties with minimal interference to college work or classes at all times.
  • Complete all necessary paper work requested and forward as appropriate, adhering to specific time limits as requested by the Campus Manager.
  • Undertake Health & Safety COSHH and risk assessments.
  • Be IT literate (use of computer) to operate IT systems and mobile devices relevant to working practice.
  • Be prepared to provide caretaking cover on other sites – this will occasionally be requested at short notice.
  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the Campus Manager commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the college.
  • Due to the nature of the post, it is mandatory that Caretaking staff are contactable at all times whilst at work or “on call” by the Campus Manager/Assistant Campus Manager, and therefore the post holder must carry a prescribed means of communication (College mobile telephones or 2-way radios).

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  • Appropriate trade or relevant experience
  • First Aid qualification (If you are not First Aid qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible)
  • Ability to organise and plan work as allocated
  • Previous experience of maintenance and repair work
  • IT Literate and confident in the use of IT systems and mobile devices
  • Good analytical skills

Desirable Criteria:

  • GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent

Welsh Language Requirements:

  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1 Desirable
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1 Desirable
