We would ideally like to engage oneteacher to teach across both sites, covering both classical and popular genres, though there may scope forthe teaching to be shared between two candidates, depending on areas of specialism.About the SchoolOccupying a spacious, green and open site near to Bristol city centre, Redmaids’ High School is the oldestGirls’ School in Britain with a history that dates back to 1634. The department has four full-time staff – the Directorof Music, the Assistant Director of Music, the Head of Keyboard Studies and a Music & DramaTechnician. In addition, we have a part-time Music Department Administrator and 19 visiting music teacherscovering piano, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion and voice.There are many opportunities for extra-curricular activities, catering for a range of musical tastes and levelsof experience. In addition to several choirs and orchestras, we have a School of Rock, Guitar Group,Percussion Ensemble, Swing Band, and instrument-specific groups, as well as a strong chamber musicprogramme.As a school, we are proud to host regular masterclass with renowned musicians across a range of disciplines.Visitors in recent years have included The Ayoub Sisters, Isata Kanneh-Mason, Pippa Cleary, Sarah Class,Andy Tweed, Elin Manahan Thomas and Nicola Benedetti, and Evelyn Glennie is due to visit in October 2025.About the roleVisiting Music Teachers at the school are self-employed, with teachers being responsible for their owninvoicing and timetabling, although the school does use SOCs software to facilitate timetabling andmonitor attendance. Lessons take place during the school day (from 8am-6pm) with a 40 minute durationin the senior school and a 30 minute duration in the junior school. Teachers are asked to create a rotatingtimetable to ensure that students do not miss the same academic lesson too many times within a giventerm.There are currently 11 guitar students in the senior school and 3 guitar students in the junior school,offering approximately 1.5 days of teaching in total. These students have a range of musical interests andlevels of ability, so we are very keen to find a candidate who is equally happy teaching both classical andmore popular genres to students with varying levels of experience. We would also very much hope that thesuccessful candidate would lead a guitar group for the students, which may include arranging music as wellas taking rehearsals.Our Visiting Music Teachers are a vital part of our music department. They are very important members ofthe school community and we highly value the contribution they make to the school and its students. Weare looking forward to welcoming another enthusiastic and energetic teacher to our team who we hope willenjoy being part of a thriving (and fun!) music department.The Music Department itself is housed in a converted ‘stable’ block and part of the ground floor has beenconverted into a purpose-built music technology suite with computers, recording equipment andkeyboards for class-teaching. There are also several practice rooms, a rehearsal room and a separate class-teaching room.
