Assistant Venue Manager

Job Title: Assistant Venue Manager

Contract: Each Assistant Venue Manager will be contracted to cover all Duty Manager shifts required
between them each month, with a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours per month during quieter
periods, increasing to 60 hours during May, October, and December. Schedules will be agreed and
confirmed one month in advance and will primarily include evening and weekend work.

Direct reports: Welcome Team and Volunteers (when Duty Managing)

Purpose of the Role

We are looking for two Assistant Venue Managers to support the Venue and Operations Manager in
ensuring the smooth and safe running of Theatre Peckham. This is a junior management role that
combines leading front of house operations as a Duty Manager with administrative responsibilities
that keep venue operations efficient and compliant. In the absence of the Venue and Operations
Manager, the Assistant Venue Manager is responsible for the safe operation of the building.

Key Responsibilities

Duty Management:

•  Act as a keyholder, responsible for opening and closing the building securely.
•

Lead Duty Management for the majority of all of productions, events and hires within your
contracted hours.
Supervise and support the Welcome Team, ensuring excellent customer service and a
professional atmosphere.

•

•  Act as the first point of contact for visiting companies, artists and hirers during working

hours.

•  Arrive punctually for shifts to ensure there is time to liaise with main contact and deliver

pre-event briefings.

•  Ensure health and safety, safeguarding and licensing requirements are met.
Lead on incident reporting and emergency procedures during events.
•
•  Maintain a visible presence during events, supporting FOH operations and ensuring an

enjoyable visitor experience.

•  Respond to urgent operational issues such as leaks, power faults or building incidents,

•

ensuring appropriate external support is contacted.
Liaise with contractors, engineers, suppliers and vendors when they are on-site, ensuring
issues are communicated to and followed up with the Venue and Operations Manager.

•  Provide regular reports on events, including attendance figures, feedback and operational

notes.

•  Deputise for the Venue & Operations Manager in their absence

Team Leadership and Training:

•  Deliver clear briefings to FOH staff and volunteers, ensuring they understand their roles and

responsibilities.
Train new FOH team members as needed, covering customer service, safety protocols and
operational tasks.

•  Create a positive and collaborative working environment, demonstrating professionalism

and teamwork.

•  Monitor staff performance and provide feedback or guidance as necessary.

Customer Service:

•  Create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, artists and event participants.
•  Ensure visiting companies and production teams’ schedules and requirements are met.
•  Provide hands-on support where needed, including customer service in the café and box

office.

•  Handle enquiries, feedback and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
•  Oversee special requirements such as accessible seating or additional audience needs.

Operational and Administrative Support:

•  Coordinate the setup and preparation of spaces for events, meetings and hires.
•  Assist the technical team with theatre space preparation when required.
•  Monitor customer flow at entrances, box office and café/bar to ensure smooth operations.
Take responsibility for cash handling, including tills, reconciliations and securing funds.

•  Maintain staff schedules on Team Up and other systems, ensuring updates are accurate and

timely.
Support FOH recruitment processes, including collecting staff documents for Senior
Management sign-off.
Support reporting requirements such as Julie’s Bicycle and Upshot by collecting and updating
data.

•  Assist with annual updating of venue documents such as policies, handbooks and risk

•

assessments.
Support the Venue and Operations Manager in following up with suppliers and operational
disputes, recording progress.

•  Assist with day-to-day building and café and bar maintenance and operations.
•  Provide ad-hoc administrative support as required.

Health and Safety:

•  Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations.

Lead safe and efficient evacuations during emergencies, liaising with emergency services.

•  Monitor public spaces, addressing or reporting hazards such as spillages or blocked exits.
•  Ensure all staff and volunteers are briefed on evacuation routes, safety protocols and

emergency procedures.

•  Maintain first aid kits and ensure incidents are recorded in the accident book.

General Duties:

•  Ensure the building is well maintained during shifts, addressing or reporting issues promptly.
Support Theatre Peckham’s mission of increasing access to the arts, ensuring all visitors feel

•  Undertake any additional tasks as required by the Venue and Operations Manager.

Skills and Attributes

Essential:

•  Previous experience in theatre, events, leisure or hospitality in a supervisory or managerial

role.
Strong initiative and problem-solving skills, able to act decisively under pressure.

Strong organisational and IT skills (Word, Excel, scheduling systems).

•  Excellent customer service and communication skills.
•
•  Confident leading staff and volunteers when Duty Managing.
•  Knowledge of, or willingness to train in, health and safety and safeguarding.

Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays and ability to work
variable hours each month, dependent on activity.
•  Experience with cash handling and reconciliation.

Desirable:

•  An interest in theatre, live events or community arts.
•  Experience working with and managing volunteers.

Familiarity with reporting systems such as Julie’s Bicycle and Upshot.
First Aid and Fire Marshal trained (or willingness to train).

Terms:

To cover all Duty Manager shifts required between them each month, with a guaranteed
minimum of 30 hours per month during quieter periods, increasing to 60 hours during May,
October, and December (exact allocation to be agreed with the Venue & Operations
Manager).

Additional hours may be available to cover periods of absence or increased activity across
the venues.
