  • Job Summary
  • Amgueddfa Cymru is home to Wales’ national collections of art, social history and natural sciences. The collections are based across Amgueddfa Cymru’s seven sites and the National Collections Centre.

The national collection of art and design is one of international importance, a unique resource for understanding the stories of visual culture and design in Wales and their place in the wider world. The Art collection includes over 2,500 paintings, sculptures and works in new media; 12,000 ceramics, silver and other applied art objects; and 35,000 prints and drawings; as well as a significant collection of photographs and works in digital media. Amgueddfa Cymru holds a comprehensive collection of works by Welsh artists and is known internationally for its nineteenth-century French paintings and sculpture. The collection also includes works by leading British and other European artists, and a significant and growing representation of international contemporary art.

The national collection belongs to the people of Wales. We want to do everything we can to make sure that they can be seen, used and enjoyed by as many people as possible, in as many places as possible.

The Art collection includes a significant number of works by artist Gwen John. This collection has been researched and is being conserved and curated in order to present a major Gwen John exhibition early in 2026. The exhibition will open at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum in Cardiff before touring to National Galleries of Scotland, Yale Centre of British Art and the National Museum of Women in the Art in Washington DC. The exhibition comprises paintings, works on paper and archival materials. As well as the works in the Amgueddfa Cymru collection, a significant number of additional works are being loaned from institutions in the UK and internationally, as well as from private lenders. The exhibition at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum will include more than two hundred objects. Many of these objects are also being prepared to tour to partner venues, as well as additional, replacement objects.
