The Role

General Description 

This role will be part of BAC’s Production & Technical Team. It may be expected to contribute to a range of workstreams, but the role will primarily lead on all our P&T work as set out below.

We are looking for a knowledgeable team leader to join our Production & Technical Team as Senior Technician, working with the Technical Manager, Production Manager, and Head of Production & Technical to set the standards for the team delivering the technical services at BAC.

You will work to deliver a professional and helpful service to both BAC’s live programme and commercial events. You will support the technical requirements of artists whilst in the rehearsal, development and performance stages of their work, at BAC and on tour. You will bring your skills to a wide range of high-end commercial events including filming, concerts, weddings, conferences, award ceremonies and fashion shows; ensuring the highest standard of technical delivery expected by our clients.

You will work as part of a Production & Technical team, consisting of; Head of Production & Technical, Technical Manager, Production Manager, 2 full-time Technicians and a pool of casual Technicians. You will work to manage and support the team’s casual Technicians across both the programme and commercial events.

You will have the opportunity to work in spaces of different scale and across all elements of BAC’s programme including visiting productions, co-productions and artist residencies; commercial events including weddings, conferences, awards ceremonies and corporate hires; youth theatre and participation work; and our touring programme.

You will lead on monitoring and maintaining technical inventory, including kit, infrastructure and storage, and regularly act as Duty Technician, responding proactively to day-to-day technical demands.

We are looking for a collaborative and highly-skilled technician who is comfortable supporting, motivating and instructing a technical team. You will bring a good working knowledge across the areas of lighting, sound, stage & AV, as well as proven experience of taking a lead role in at least one specialism.

Role Responsibilities

Team Member Responsibilities: Production & Technical

• Assist in planning the use and distribution of resources across all productions and events. These include but are not limited to, allocation of casual Technicians, managing the technical inventory, and assessing the technical needs of each performance and event. This may also include coordinating technical hires and purchases in conjunction with the Technical Production Managers;

• Work as a multi-skilled Technician across all disciplines as assigned and as necessary for BAC and incoming productions;

• Take the lead role when working with core, casual, and occasionally freelance Technicians, and ensure good working practice within the team;

• Model positive behaviour and relationships within the team, encouraging a collaborative approach to working with other projects and teams;

• Book, brief and line manage the regular, casual and freelance Technicians working across the building, ensuring they have received the appropriate training and information for the work they are undertaking;

• Ensure the smooth running of all technical aspects of the building’s day to day operation;

• Work as Duty Technician as assigned by the weekly rota, being available on radio as the technician on-call for all activities and events for that day;

• Lead and participate in the implementation of PAT Testing & general maintenance to ensure all BAC technical equipment is safe for use;

• Actively ensure the performance, events, technical and technical storage areas of the building spaces are in a safe, tidy, and in a presentable condition at all times;

• Proactively manage your time, using initiative to ensure any quieter periods are used efficiently;

• Keep an active interest in equipment and industry developments, and contribute information to the Production & Technical team meetings as appropriate;

• Ensure good lines of communication both within the Production & Technical project and with other projects;

• Attend production, staff, project and technical meetings as required;

• Allocate technical facilities and equipment for specific projects both at BAC and offsite as instructed;

• Coordinate hires and loans of technical equipment;

• Work with Head of Production & Technical and the Technical Manager to manage consumables and maintenance budgets as instructed.

Creative Impact

• Where agreed, lead on liaising with visiting companies about the technical delivery of specific productions;

• Working with the Head of Production & Technical and Technical Manager, act as the lead technical contact for residencies and work-in-development each season.

Creative Enterprises

• Work with the Head of Production & Technical and Technical Manager to support and maintain the Grand Hall during events seasons;

• Where assigned, and with guidance from the Head of Production & Technical and Technical Manager, act as the lead technician and primary technical contact for weddings and other commercial events;

• Attend show-rounds and site visits to facilitate technical provision for weddings and other commercial events.

Health & Safety

• Actively ensure the performance and technical areas of the building are in a safe and presentable condition at all times;

• Ensure you and any contractors/staff you are supervising adhere to BAC’s Health & Safety policy and practices;

• Report and appropriately escalate any risks or breaches according to BAC’s Health & Safety policy;

• With the support of the Head of Production and Technical and Technical Manager, stay up to date on any relevant changes in legislation;

• Schedule and manage maintenance of equipment and installations in line with legislation and best practice.

Team Development & Leadership

• Lead by example in your conduct and approach; provide supportive line management to technicians, ensuring areas for development and training are identified and addressed;

• Show a commitment to your own professional and personal development as a multi-skilled technician – work effectively with your line manager to identify areas for your development and training, and maintain good communications regarding your workload.

• Ensure all work is delivered to a high quality and upholds BAC’s purpose and values – taking a flexible approach where possible and appropriate;

Essential:

• A good understanding of the production process and theatre production techniques

• A good working knowledge of theatre electrics, lighting technology, and electrical safety including 3 phase power

• A good working knowledge of AV techniques and equipment

• A good working knowledge of modern theatre sound, live sound set ups, live mixing and sound operation

• Knowledge of Lighting Networks, e.g. Art-Net/sACN (for lighting bias)

• Good working knowledge of QLab and Dante Network (for sound bias)

• A good knowledge of lighting and sound networks and basic fault-finding techniques

• A good working knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation regarding technical theatre

• High Level of sound knowledge and an ability to programme Qlab

Desirable:

• Working knowledge of Avolites Tiger Touch control desk

Experience:

the practical application of the knowledge that a candidate has acquired through working or living

Essential

• Experience of working closely with artists and/or theatre companies in a technical role

• Experience of and willingness to work at height

• Experience using ETC lighting desks and / or Yamaha Desks

• Experience of leading a team and/or instructing contractors

Desirable:

• Experience of working on commercial events and interacting with clients

• Experience in fully flexible venues

Skills:

Terms & Conditions

This role is 5 days a week Monday-Friday; usual office hours are 10am-6pm. We offer flexible working where possible.

Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. All staff at Battersea Arts Centre are expected to attend performances and events and be a part of the artistic life of the organisation.

Salary
£29,000 - £30,000 gross per annum, dependent on experience

Hours
35 hours per week, excluding a daily one-hour lunch break. Evening and weekend working will be required.
