  • Job Summary
  • The CELF Senior Paper Conservator will have specialist expertise in the care and conservation of works in that discipline. The focus of this post will be on works by contemporary artists that are being digitised and/or lent to partner galleries as part of the CELF project.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Leading on remedial conservation treatments of selected modern and contemporary artworks on paper that have been triaged as requiring conservation during the mapping of the collection.
    • Condition checking and remedial treatment of modern, contemporary and historic works on paper for Amgueddfa Cymru Exhibitions, often including challenging materials.
    • Facilitating our programme of loans to museums and galleries across Wales, the UK, and internationally. Advising on loan conditions, undertaking condition reporting and conservation on works on paper that are being lent.
    • Research and planning for the development of Amgueddfa Cymru’s collection care and acquisition practices for complex contemporary art installations, including liaison with living artists.
    • Develop and maintain the Paper Conservation Studio, including requesting supplies and equipment as necessary, updating health and safety documentation, cleaning and responsible disposal of waste.
    • Provide tours and talks for the public, partner galleries and other staff members to share knowledge of conservation and the collection at Amgueddfa Cymru.
    • Support partner galleries as a conservation liaison, responding to queries and advising on best practice where necessary.
    • Undertake virtual/physical couriering as required.
    • Working with the Art Technicians and external contractors, manage and undertake mounting, framing and building of supports such as cradles as required.
    • Specify packing methods and materials for transport and storage.
    • Work with external contractors such as technicians on Amgueddfa Cymru collections.
    • Commercial responsibility: every member of staff has responsibility for the commercial success of Amgueddfa Cymru. Specifically for this role: The role will create a legacy of works which have been treated and prepared for display and loan internationally as well as in Wales.
