MAINTENANCE APPRENTICE
JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:

MAINTENANCE APPRENTICE

Responsible to:

Clerk of Works

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

•  To achieve good timekeeping in attending work and college.
•  Carry out relevant trade duties on responsive and planned works as requested to School

specifications and standards.

•  Repairs and restoration work on school properties.
•  To work in accordance with the information, instruction and training given safely and

efficiently and to inform the line manager of any potential safety hazards not adequately
controlled.

•  Complete relevant documentation to the satisfaction of your line manager.
•  Use authorised plant, tools and equipment provided with due care and attention and as

supervised.

•  Work as part of a team.
•  Work flexibly across the repairs and maintenance service.
•  Build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, customers and managers to

ensure the effectiveness of the repairs and maintenance service.

•  Take part in the apprentice review process and complete any training required and be

capable of working independently in the final year of the apprenticeship.

•  Undertake health and safety and other training as required.

Health and Safety

Safely load, transport and unload materials and equipment as directed.

•
•  Adhere to risk assessments and method statements relating to own area of work and to work

in safe manner taking account your own and other people’s health and wellbeing.

•  Adhere  to  Health  and  Safety  policy  and  procedures  including  the  wearing  of  personal

protective equipment when necessary.

•  Ensure that routine housekeeping of the work areas around the school, the workshops and

vehicles; keeping them tidy, safe and legal.

•  Ensure the safe upkeep of tools and equipment, including the maintenance of any relevant

records.

•  Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the requirements of Health and Safety

and other relevant legislation.

•  Ensure that Risk Assessments are undertaken, documented and reviewed for Painting and

Decorating activities including routine and one-off jobs.
•  Ensure the safe storage and monitoring of any COSHH items.

Miscellaneous

•  To assist the Clerk of Works with delegated work as required.
•  To use school IT systems including the Maintenance Helpdesk to manage jobs.
•  To assist colleagues as necessary during busy periods.
•  Attend relevant staff meetings, other meetings, and training and development as required by

the post.

•  Be  aware  of  and  comply  with  policies  and  procedures  relating  to  safeguarding  (child
protection),  health  safety  and  security,  confidentiality  and  data  protection,  reporting  all
concerns to an appropriate person.
•  Contribute to the ethos of the school.
•  Your duties may vary from time to time within the broad remit of your role and grade. You

are required to undertake any such reasonable and appropriate duties.

Health & Safety

The Maintenance Apprentice must be fully conversant with the School’s Health & Safety Policy and
report any breaches of the policy to their Line Manager.
