The department
Chemistry is a popular choice at Oundle and the department is flourishing. We are a supportive, forward thinking and professional team of eight teachers each with their own lab housed within the renowned SciTec building. We are well supported by three technicians and place practical work at the centre of our teaching.
At GCSE, pupils follow the Edexcel International syllabus and there are currently around 85 pupils studying Chemistry in the Sixth Form following the CAIE syllabus. Each year several pupils compete for highly competitive degree courses such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medicine and Natural Sciences at the top universities both in the UK and abroad.
The department currently offers a practical course as part of our Quadrivium programme where Sixth Form pupils have the opportunity to study areas and learn techniques beyond the syllabus in a fully equipped chemistry project room. Sixth Form pupils also have the opportunity to prepare for and take part in national competitions such as the Chemistry Olympiad and both the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and Chemistry Race.
As well as academic success, the department enjoys running Outreach activities with both local primary and secondary schools as part of the OPEN Partnership.
