About

Overview and Tasks
Home-Start believes that the earliest years make the biggest impact. Our work is with families who have (at least) one child under five and that are facing challenges such as loneliness, postnatal depression, or multiple births. We train volunteers to visit the family once a week, supporting them in a variety of emotional and practical ways. This is for up to 3 hours a week, one day per week. We also have volunteers supporting at our groups and other activities through the year.

Our approach works because our volunteers have parenting experience or experience with children, and they understand the stresses and strains of life. They are there to listen; not to judge.

What additional skills or experience you should have?

We are looking for people with a genuine desire to make a difference to a family's life.
If you have the following skills, we would love you to join our team:
- A can-do attitude
- Good listening skills
- The ability to have a non-judgemental approach
- The capacity to commit to three hours every week for at least a year.

You should have experience with children/families.
A DBS check will be required to volunteer with families, however we will assist you with this.
What training we will provide for you Comprehensive training is given from the outset, free of charge, on matters like domestic abuse and safeguarding.

Volunteers are also offered ongoing training and supervision.
What you will get out of volunteering for us
Volunteers are celebrated at Home-Start Barnet, Brent and Harrow. We offer ongoing training and supervision from highly trained staff. We organise coffee mornings and events that encourage volunteers to come together and build positive relationships with each other. This also allows us the opportunity to show volunteers how much we appreciate them.
