The role
As a Copywriter, you’ll play a key role in elevating the CIPD brand through high-quality written content and digital storytelling. You’ll work closely with the Digital Content Strategist to plan, produce and optimise content that drives engagement, discoverability and web performance - with a particular focus on news, blogs and email. You’ll also take ownership of the CIPD’s news pages, using data and insights to make strategic editorial decisions to create high-performing content that strengthens our reputation and brand narrative.
Working collaboratively and proactively across the Marcomms team and organisation-wide subject matter experts, you’ll identify stories, craft engaging copy and provide expert advice and guidance to ensure our words inspire action and support our brand identity. You’ll also support copywriting excellence across the Marcomms team, including email, social media and web copy.
What you’ll be doing
- Writing engaging content that aligns with the CIPD's tone of voice and strategic messaging priorities – including news articles, blog posts, emails and web copy.
- Providing expert copywriting support and guidance for the weekly and monthly member update comms, taking responsibility for building copywriting standards across this content.
- Reviewing and editing content, produced both within and outside of the Marcomms department, to ensure copy is reader-friendly, accessible, engaging and discoverable (both SEO and GEO), reflects the CIPD brand, key messages and priorities, and adheres to house style and tone of voice principles.
- Supporting our campaigns teams to produce high quality email, social and web copy
- Working in partnership and championing tone and style guidelines across all content, acting as a confident and trusted adviser on tone of voice and copywriting standards – including advising senior stakeholders and subject matter experts on tone, clarity and messaging.
- Working in collaboration, developing, and rolling out guidelines and tools for effective and responsible AI-assisted copywriting.
- Responsible for editorial planning, workflow management and web publishing.
- Proactively identifying opportunities to improve copy clarity, engagement and effectiveness across channels.
- Identifying opportunities to use AI tools to enhance productivity while maintaining quality standards.
- Working with the Digital Content Strategist to analyse and interpret performance data. Using insights to shape content planning and storytelling approaches, as well as optimising content to improve discoverability (SEO and GEO) and engagement.
What you’ll need to be successful
- Demonstrable experience in copywriting, content creation, journalism or similar roles.
- Experience of writing clear, engaging copy across different formats and channels.
- Excellent editing and proofreading skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong editorial judgement and understanding of brand voice, tone and storytelling principles.
- Familiarity with accessibility and inclusivity in written communications.
- Awareness of digital content trends, SEO and GEO principles, and the role of copy in content optimisation and audience engagement strategies – including personalisation and segmentation.
- Knowledge of digital publishing workflows and best practices.
- Experience with content management systems (CMS) and ability to directly publish digital content.
- Experience with AI writing tools and understanding of their appropriate application in professional contexts.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to independently manage and prioritise multiple projects simultaneously, often to tight deadlines and with minimal supervision.
- Relevant sector knowledge or interest in HR, learning and development, or professional bodies.

CIPD Empowering People-Valuing Difference. At the CIPD, we believe that every person brings unique perspectives, experiences and strengths that enrich our workplaces and communities. We see diversity as the wide range of visible and non-visible differences that make each of us who we are — including, but not limited to: age, colour, disability, ethnicity, education, gender identity, neurodiversity, religion or belief, relationship status, sex, sexual orientation, socio-economic background and other personal and protected characteristics and experiences.
Research continues to show that equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), drives better decision-making, innovation and problem-solving and in turn better organisational business outcomes. By embracing our differences and creating equal opportunities and inclusive cultures we can build environments where everyone feels respected, valued and able to thrive — and where both organisational and individual goals are achieved.
We are determined to ensuring employment policy and practice promote and deliver EDI at every stage of the employment relationship. This includes not only recognising and understanding how each individuals personal and protected characteristics can either advantage or disadvantage employment experiences and outcomes, but also to continually strengthen our understanding and sharing the benefits EDI.
Please note, we reserve the right to close or extend this position depending on application numbers. Therefore, we would urge you to submit an application as soon as possible.
