Volunteer Coordinator
Purpose of the role:
Volunteers are a strategic asset at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter
The Volunteer Coordinator supports the Volunteering Manager by implementing key elements of the agreed volunteer recruitment and retention volunteer strategy. They will be the first point of contact for all volunteers.
They will provide coordination for all volunteers, providing timely communication that leads to a positive volunteer experience.

Main Duties:
- Deliver an ongoing volunteer recruitment drive, recruiting to defined volunteer role opportunities that support all areas of the shelter, including animal welfare, administration and support functions, fundraising and retail.
- Deliver induction training to volunteers.
- Communicate regularly with all volunteers to assist with providing positive volunteer experiences.
- Develop volunteer case studies for external marketing.
- Support the function managers by maintaining a rota of volunteers
- Build relationships with community organisations to take advantage of promoting volunteering opportunities.
- Ensure quick and effective administration of volunteer applications with support from the department administrator.
- Support the Volunteer Manager in ensuring that all volunteers feel valued and recognised for their contribution.
- Host regular volunteer forums and thank you events online and in person at the shelter.
- Work with the Volunteer Manager in championing volunteering by providing internal advocacy where appropriate.
- Monitor volunteer attendance and conduct welfare checks where necessary.
- Manage the volunteer what’s app groups ensuring compliance with group rules and guidelines and encouraging positive usage and dialogue.
- Provide regular reporting on volunteer attendance and retention and further agreed KPIs

Essential Criteria
Experience
- Experience of coordinating volunteers in a charity setting
- Lived experience of volunteering
Skills and abilities
- Excellent communication skills.
- Good team player but also able to work independently and use own initiative.
- Strong organisational skills, including time management, able to multi task and prioritise workload.
Personal Attributes
- Reliable and trustworthy
- Friendly, approachable, and able to motivate volunteers.
- Empathy and patience.
- Flexible and willing to work across a 7-day week including occasional evenings.
Other requirements
- Commitment to the values and mission of the charity.
- Understanding of and commitment to health and safety practices.
Desirable Criteria
Experience
- Experience of interviewing as part of volunteer recruitment
- Event coordination experience
- Experience of delivering training
Time Commitment:
Initial one year contract.
30 hours a week, flexibly across a 7 day week.
Salary: £21,200 actual, 30 hours (fte £26,500)
