Spotting hazards and preventing accidents. Giving advice on water safety. Controlling unruly behaviour. Water rescue. Context of the role To create a safe, fun and welcoming swimming pool for all our users and guests. Faversham Swimming Pools is a community, charity funded pool and we want to offer a wide range of activities to the population. The lifeguard’s role is to ensure the safety of all those in the water, this will range from early morning swimmers, to evenings, with families and weak swimmers and groups that use the pools on a regular basis. There are a range of indoor and outdoor pools, including rapids and paddling pools. Accountabilities and responsibilities General responsibilities: Supervise swimming activities in the pool and ensure that policies, guidelines and safety procedures are followed. Warn swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforce pool regulations and water safety policies. Administer first aid and rescue to swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administer CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary. Evaluate conditions for safety and initiate aquatics emergency action plan as required. Inspect pool facilities, equipment and water to ensure that they are safe and usable. Supervise and assist in cleaning the pool, and related facilities and equipment. Resolve scheduling conflicts to ensure safe pool environment when competing programs/priorities require use of aquatic facilities. Knowledge, skills and competencies required Essential: NPLQ – Valid qualification. Ongoing monthly refresher training will be provided. Competency Test will be required before being successful in the position. Swimming proficiency in all types of water conditions Ability to work on weekends and evenings. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Enthusiastic and positive attitude towards swimming and customer service Good communicator The ability to inspire confidence Perseverance and patience, to remain vigilant whilst on position. Desirable: Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the visitors and other staff Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services Specific on site training will be provided to induct the successful candidate into our team of lifeguards This job specification was last reviewed in: August 2021
