PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The news team in Derby is a tried and tested place to turbo-charge your career and prove yourself capable of just about anything. We deliver news for all platforms, and aspire to be the most creative, most ambitious local story team we can be. You’ll get to work with fantastic colleagues in a patch where news stories are hard-won rather than found growing on trees. You could be contributing online news stories, radio guests, bulletin material, TV packages and social media videos. This role is primarily reporting, but we’re likely to throw you into newsreading on BBC Radio Derby too, one of the local radio network’s most successful stations.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

The local story team in Derby is a really supportive environment to grow and show your full potential. We put a premium on seeking impact for our stories, regularly getting our work on to the BBC’s national news outlets, as well as our local and regional output.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Deliver original news stories for multiple platforms.
  • Work sensitively with contributors to give everyone a good experience of working with the BBC.
  • Build a strong knowledge of the patch and our audience.
  • Be a self-starter who can work independently under pressure and motivate others.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Good news judgement and understanding of editorial guidelines.
  • Excellent written English for broadcast and online.
  • Track record of generating ideas for news programmes and services.
  • Strong on-air voice.
  • Good understanding of BBC England priorities for audience growth.
  • Confidence in using recording equipment for newsgathering.

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of the editorial area.
  • Experience of writing news stories for online and radio.
  • Experience of reading news bulletins.
  • Full driving licence.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
