About the LGBTQ+ Project

The OUT in Leeds group originally ran from 2018 to 2024 and filled a vital gap in local support. Its return will restore a safe and inclusive space for learning-disabled and autistic LGBTQ+ adults to connect, learn, and thrive.

The group will be delivered weekly in Leeds city centre by a small, dedicated team – one Group Leader and two Group Support Workers – offering a mix of social, creative, and educational activities shaped by members themselves.

The Role

As Group Leader, you’ll plan and deliver an engaging programme of activities that support wellbeing, confidence, and inclusion. You’ll lead a small team of staff and volunteers, ensuring sessions are safe, accessible, and empowering for all members.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and delivering a 12-week activity programme with and for members.
  • Ensuring all activities are inclusive, accessible, and promote independence.
  • Leading and supporting staff and volunteers to deliver high-quality, person-centred sessions.
  • Creating and following risk assessments, and ensuring member safety at all times.
  • Managing petty cash and handling group funds responsibly.
  • Monitoring and reporting outcomes to meet funder requirements.
  • Maintaining clear communication with members, carers, and the Project Manager.
  • Supporting fundraising activities that help sustain the project long-term.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a values-driven, passionate, and proactive person who brings energy, empathy, and organisation to their work. Someone who values inclusion and equality and believes everyone deserves to feel seen and supported.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • At least 6 months’ experience supporting autistic people and/or people with learning disabilities.
  • Experience facilitating activities or groups in a person-centred way.
  • An understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, gender identity, and sexuality.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • A flexible, positive, and team-focused approach.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding, and equality.

Desirable:

  • Lived experience within the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Knowledge of the social model of disability and trauma-informed practice.
  • Experience of writing risk assessments or monitoring project outcomes

You may have worked in community projects, advocacy, LGBTQ+ services, or support roles, what matters most is your understanding, compassion, and drive to make a difference.

Our Values

We’re looking for someone who shares our core values:

Person-Centred  Inclusive  Empowering Quality

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to lead a small but impactful project that makes a real difference. If you’re passionate about visibility, safety, and inclusion for learning disabled or autistic LGBTQ+ people, we’d love to hear from you.

Our Commitment to Race Equality

We acknowledge the existence of institutional racism and are committed to challenging inequality. We actively work to remove barriers and practices that contribute to systemic injustice. People in Action operates a zero-tolerance policy toward racism.

Closing Date: Monday 10th November 2025 at 11:59pm
