Hours: Approximately 0.8 FTE (flexible and negotiable depending on candidate availability and school needs)

Main Purpose

The School Business Manager (SBM) plays a key role in leading and managing the school's business and operational functions. This includes finance, IT, HR, facilities, compliance, policy, and general administration. The SBM provides professional leadership to support staff and ensures optimal use of resources to achieve strategic goals. Working closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team, the SBM ensures smooth daily operations, enabling educators to focus on teaching and learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership, Strategy & Communication

• Lead, manage, and develop the school's office and support staff team.

• Support the Headteacher in aligning operational, financial, and business decisions with strategic goals.

• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency in school processes and technology.

• Manage projects from school governor meetings, including progress and risk reporting.

Administration and Projects

• Oversee efficient school administration and communication among SLT, parents, governors, and staff.

• Ensure records are managed according to retention schedules and data protection laws.

• Lead or coordinate key projects, ensuring timely and budget-conscious delivery aligned with strategic objectives.

Financial Management

• Collaborate with the Headteacher and Finance Manager to manage a balanced and effective school budget.

• Ensure smooth operations of the finance department with appropriate delegation.

• Submit annual budget to governors and monitor financial performance.

• Review financial forecasts for long-term planning and strategic decisions.

• Lead procurement and tendering processes to ensure value for money.

• Oversee bank accounts, invoicing, payments, and income collection with strong financial controls.

Human Resources

• Manage recruitment, appraisal, disciplinary, and grievance procedures in line with employment law and school policy.

• Provide basic HR advice and liaise with external HR/legal providers as needed.

• Review staffing structure with the Headteacher and Staffing Committee for financial efficiency and effective deployment.

• Oversee payroll and coordinate with the school's payroll provider. Compliance, Policies, and Health & Safety

• Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

• Support policy development and review with the Headteacher and Governors.

• Act as Data Protection Officer, advising staff and monitoring compliance.

• Oversee maintenance and security of the school site with the premises team.

• Ensure health and safety compliance and implement robust risk management processes.

The School Business Manager is expected to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, in accordance with school policies and the staff code of conduct.
