Corpus Christi College Cambridge Job Description Job Title: College Nurse Type of Contract: Part-time (25 hours per week); 2-year fixed-term contract Department: Wellbeing Responsible to: Head of Wellbeing Purpose of Job: Provides confidential advice and support on a wide range of medical and mental health issues to the undergraduate and postgraduate students and occasionally to Fellows and staff. Duties and responsibilities: The primary role of the College Nurse is to provide first-line health care and health-related welfare advice and first aid service to students and other college members. The College Nurse is a member of the College's Wellbeing team, and works closely with the Senior Tutor, the Head of Wellbeing, the Tutors, the EDI Champions, and the tutorial office, as well as with other Heads of Departments in aspects of their work that may involve student welfare. 1. Provide high standards of care and meet the nursing needs of the College: • Hold regular independent surgeries on weekdays during term time • Contribute to wellbeing team, including triage, formulation, risk management and support plans • Be in touch and visit ill students in their accommodation and in hospital when necessary • Answer queries and provide advice and information by telephone and email • Keep accurate records of all student interactions • Initiate contact with student to provide follow-up care • Develop a good relationship with the medical and administrative staff of the Trumpington Street Medical Practice and the Newnham Walk Surgery, where most of our students are registered. • Raise awareness amongst the student body of the offer available for them from the University Student Services (University Counselling Service, Mental Health Advisors, Access and Disability Resource Centre, etc.). • Raise awareness among the student body of public health initiatives. 2. Provide a comprehensive support service: • Liaise closely, whilst maintaining professional confidentiality, with appropriate healthcare professionals, the Senior Tutor, the Head of Wellbeing, the Tutors, the EDI Champions, the tutorial office, the JCR and MCR Welfare Officers, and other members of staff as needed, to ensure continuity of care. • Liaise closely with the University Student Wellbeing Service and the University Student Service departments as required. Nurse Job Description – November 2025 • Participate in regular reflective practice or clinic supervision sessions per term, to support safe and best practice. • Engage in appropriate Post-Registration education for professional up-dating as required. 3. Augment welfare support: • Support students with disabilities or special needs. • Offer holistic consultations by appointment. • Provide health education as appropriate, both planned and opportunistically. 4. General • Health and Safety All staff must adopt a responsible and proactive attitude towards health and safety and to comply with any procedures as required by the College in order to ensure the health and safety of themselves, their colleagues and any other persons that may be affected by their actions. Nurse Job Description – November 2025 Person Specification Criteria Education/Qualifications • RCN or NMC Registered Nurse (RMN/RGN) with significant post- registration experience Knowledge/Experience • Sufficient experience to manage a range of medical, psychological and other emergencies. • Experience of managing minor illnesses and injuries. • Experience of working with young people. • Knowledge of local referral pathways. • Experience of working with patients with mental health conditions. Skills • Counselling/therapy skills • Much of the work is advisory in nature and the ability to win the confidence and trust of young people is essential. • Well-developed organisational and administrative skills and an ability to prioritise workload and recognise emergency situations. • High degree of flexibility to respond to unpredictable workload. • Initiative, discretion and ability to work with limited supervision. • Ability to deal appropriately with sensitive and private information about individuals and to operate in a highly confidential and professional manner.
