We’re looking for students from across the University to join Student Council!

Student Council is a group of students from all areas of the University working together to improve student life through the Students’ Union. The Council discusses ideas and policies that could improve student life at YSJ, and holds the SU’s Student Leadership Group accountable to the priorities and actions they set out to achieve.

The Council is made up of the SU’s Student Leadership Group (the two SU Presidents, the Chairs of Schools, and Chairs of Networks), and volunteer student representatives from across the University.

We are looking for student representatives to join for 2025/2026, including society and sport club members, Course Reps, postgraduate research students, and students who don’t represent a particular group.

Council takes place twice a semester on a Thursday evening between 5pm and 7pm. In Semester 1, Council will take place on Thursday 23rd October and Thursday 11th December. Members are expected to attend and actively participate. There may be some reading to do in advance of the meeting to help you prepare. As such we would expect this role to take 6 hours per semester, concentrated in the weeks where there is a Council meeting.

By becoming a member of Student Council you will:

  • Contribute to SU campaigns and changemaking
  • Participate in consultations to make YSJ better for students
  • Learn more about how the SU and the University work
  • Meet and work with students from across YSJ
  • Develop professional skills to enhance your employability

Interested? Email Kate at su.voice@yorksj.ac.uk letting us know your name, your course, your year, and why you’d like to join Student Council in no more than 100 words by midday on Monday 20th October!
