Description of Post

This post will enhance the service for older people with a predominately proactive Ambulatory Medical Hub and Spoke model of care lead by a physician in Geriatric Medicine with some capacity for short stay rehabilitation beds as set out in the 10 Step Framework of the National Clinical Care Programme.

The Consultant Geriatrician in conjunction with Older Persons Services and the wider consultant Geriatrician Group will develop the Donegal Ambulatory Care Hub supporting older people to remain at home and supporting early discharge from acute hospital.

This consultant position will integrate with the existing consultant staff within the Geriatric Service and the wider Department of General Medicine at Letterkenny University Hospital.

The Consultant Geriatrician will bring an expert evidence-based approach to the care of older people in Donegal and will be integral part of the ICPOP team whose aim is to deliver multidisciplinary care to frail older people especially in the community setting and support the further development of ICPOP in this area.

Implement on going educational programmes for colleagues in community and acute care.

Establish and be responsible for a number of community geriatric medicine clinics as part of a larger re-organisational process.

Develop and maintain communication with people on complex matters, issues and ideas and/or in complex situations

Work in partnership with others to develop take forward and evaluate direction, policies and strategies

Professional Qualifications

Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialties of geriatric medicine and general (internal) medicine.

Salary

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:

€233,527     €246,150      €259,475     €266,489     €273,501     €280,513

Incremental credit is awarded in respect of previous experience at Consultant level.
