Two satisfactory references and evidence must be provided of a right to work in the United Kingdom. About the job; The The purpose of this post is to help carers have a voice, maintain their independence, and exercise greater control and choice over their lives. The role will include supporting people who are over 18 years old and providing unpaid care and support for a family member, partner, friend or child who needs help because of age, illness or disability across the Kirklees area. Advocacy is "Taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need' (NDTi). The Carers Advocacy Worker role involves; • To provide one to one statutory advocacy under the Care Act in addition to non-statutory advocacy. • To facilitate group advocacy sessions, drop ins and self-advocacy skills development sessions for carers. • To signpost people to appropriate other local or national services including mental health and healthcare services This role will include working with people of all ages. You will be working with unpaid carers, as well as people with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with mental health needs, people with physical and sensory impairment, people with an acquired brain injury and those with dementia. The main tasks of the role are; • To provide a telephone response to enquiries and requests for advocacy support. • To provide a response to requests for advocacy within contractual time limits. • To carry out and complete an assessment of advocacy need. • To complete an advocacy action plan in partnership with the client. • To signpost to appropriate specific legal advice and other appropriate services where necessary. • To provide confidential one to one advocacy. • To provide self-advocacy and negotiation skills training to carers groups. • Work with and consult with carers to develop self-help/self-advocacy materials for carers. • Provide advocacy drop-ins across the Kirklees area to enable easy access to the service by carers. • To assist individuals using the service to participate in assessment and planning and to represent their views when necessary. • To attend and support carers at meetings such as Carers Assessments, reviews, ward rounds, complaints meetings etc. • To ensure that individuals using the service are able to make informed choices about their care and treatment. • To ensure that people using the service are able to assert their rights and are supported to self- advocate whenever possible. • Encourage individuals to explore their potential to the fullest, push boundaries and take risks to maintain or regain increased control over their daily lives. • To work within and comply with the contractual remit of the service, the code of practice, code of conduct, company rules and all Cloverleaf policies. All staff have a responsibility toward the effective running of Cloverleaf Advocacy. As such new tasks and duties may develop in the light of experience. These may be allocated where reasonable, after discussion with the postholder. About you: We are looking for someone who is passionate about supporting people to speak up and be heard. Travel expenses will only be paid within the contract working area. • Have recent experience in a paid or voluntary capacity involving a face-to-face role with Unpaid Carers. • Have experience of working in the Voluntary Sector, Health or Social Care. • Demonstrate excellent communication and negotiation skills -verbally and in writing • Have good IT skills, and be proficient using Microsoft Office 365. • Be able to develop and continually improve service delivery • Be able to keep up to date, accurate and accessible records • Be able to reflect on and learn from experience • Be able to use supervision and peer support effectively • Be able to manage and prioritise a complex and varied workload • Be able to identify and report on safeguarding issues • To be self-motivated and be able to work under own initiative • Have a flexible and positive approach • Work ethically and honestly • Be able to take personal responsibility for your own performance and decisions Additional requirements; • Our support workers need to travel independently of public transport. You will need to have a full driving licence and access to a vehicle that you can use for work purposes during your hours of work. • Due to the independent nature of advocacy, you must not be employed by any other health or social care organisation at the time of appointment.
