Job purpose

•  To provide cover for short or medium-term staff absence on an ‘as and when required’ basis,
to ensure that the education and well-being of pupils is the priority, and to be accountable
for achieving the highest possible standards of work and conduct.

•  To be aware of academic and pastoral needs of the children in their care.

Key duties & responsibilities

You will be required to carry out the following duties:

•  Be responsible for the registration of the class.
•  Teach pupils according to their individual needs in line with the School’s policies.
•

In the event that work is not already planned, the Supply Teacher should have their own
resources available to deliver a suitable lesson for the assigned year group.

•  Resources and teaching methods should include and/or address:

the need for a clear structure for lessons, maintaining suitable pace;

-  provision of tasks relevant for whole classes, groups and for individuals which

provide appropriate level of challenge;
a variety of teaching strategies to ensure interest of pupils is maintained;
identification of pupils who have special educational needs, are very able or
not yet fluent in English;

-  opportunities to contribute to pupils’ personal, spiritual, moral, social and

cultural development;
the need for all pupils to be taught within a framework of equal opportunities.

•  Monitor and be responsible for the use and maintenance of teaching resources provided for

the class and/or individual pupils.

•  Ensure the appropriate use of support staff provided for the class.
•  Ensure that the learning environment is kept tidy and in line with the school’s expectations.
•  Adhere to the discipline and behaviour policy of the school and, in general:
set high expectations for pupil behaviour and presentation;

-  maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health
and safety, both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and
when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere;
contribute positively to ensuring that pupils are taught in a safe and
supportive learning environment.

•  Mark and monitor pupils’ work, providing constructive feedback and setting targets for

future progression.

•  Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
•  Check that pupils have understood and completed work set.
•  Monitor pupils’ strengths and areas for development.
•  Plan, as appropriate, to ensure that pupils can continue to make demonstrable progress.
•  Be responsible for monitoring and reporting to parents (as appropriate) on the progress of

pupils in the class.

•  Check Reading Record books daily for Year 1 and 2 children; change books, read with the

child, and record.

•  Check that Prep children have a homework diary, and that homework is set and written down.
•  Cover playground duties and/or extra-curricular activities, as required by the Deputy Head.

It should be noted that this is not a definitive list; your duties will be at least those listed above.
You will be expected to:

•  Conduct yourself with professionalism, tact and diplomacy at all times as a representative of

Kingswood

•  Observe health and safety procedures and work safely at all times
•  Comply with all school policies and procedures including reporting any concerns to the

appropriate person in relation to those covering child protection, health, safety, welfare,
security, confidentiality and data protection.

  qualifications, experience and skills

You will have:

Education to degree level

•  Qualified teacher status

A detailed knowledge of Key Stage 1 and/or Key Stage 2 teaching
The ability to be both inspirational and nurturing to ensure every child achieves his/her full
potential
Exceptional organisational and communication skills
The experience of successfully leading and managing classroom Learning Assistants
Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact appropriately with others within the
school community
Excellent communication skills with pupils, colleagues and parent body
