Job overview
To undertake Nurse Led Clinical sessions including history taking and physical examinations of patients. To support the Lead Nurses with responsibility for managing the training and development of the nursing team. To support with assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating clinical competency development programmes for all nurses within Luton Sexual Health. To develop nursing practice in Luton Sexual Health in collaboration with Consultants and Lead Nurses. This will include developing and implementing documentation/training to support extended/advanced practice e.g. Patient Group Directions and Nursing policy/Guidelines, in response to service developments. To act as a clinical expert within the Trust, this will involve dissemination of specialist skills and knowledge to others. Be instrumental in supporting Lead Nurses to achieve the 48hr target.
Main duties of the job
To ensure appropriate staffing levels are in place to reflect changing work load and meet the needs of patients.
In relation to Patients with Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV; Advanced microscopy skills to make appropriate diagnosis; Nurse-led clinics for test assessing and screening asymptomatic and symptomatic patients; Cryotherapy; BBV testing; Contraceptive advice and provision; LARC procedures.
Triage case load according to urgency, agreed protocols and working practices.
Provide HIV prevention, treatment and care as part of a fully integrated sexual health and HIV service.
Practice autonomously, working independently within scope of clinical practice and in conjunction with other relevant clinical staff.
Manage a caseload of patients both in face to face and telephone clinics, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
To prescribe as an Independent and Supplementary Nurse Prescriber within the legal framework of Non-Medical Prescribing and the Trust’s Non-Medical Prescribing policies, and within the scope of the therapeutic competence for Family Planning and Sexual Reproductive Health
To prescribe and review medication for their effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-base practice, national/clinic protocols and within scope of practice.
To provide information and advice on prescribed or over the counter medication, on medication regimes, side effects and interactions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Managerial
To ensure appropriate staffing levels are in place to reflect changing work load and meet the needs of patients.
To actively engage with local and national organizations in developing and advancing nursing practice.
To promote, plan, implement and evaluate a programme of clinical supervision for all nurses in the team.
To support the Lead Nurses and deputise in their absence as required.
Clinical
The post holder carries continuing responsibility for setting standards of care, the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. In relation to:
Patients with Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV
Venepuncture
Male and female genital examinations and taking samples for microscopy
Advanced microscopy skills to make appropriate diagnosis
Ordering microbiology and biochemistry tests - urine, blood and other body fluids
Nurse-led clinics for test assessing and screening asymptomatic and symptomatic patients
Cryotherapy
BBV testing
Contraceptive advice and provision
LARC procedures
Sexual Health Promotion and risk reduction
Partner notification
Triage case load according to urgency, agreed protocols and working practices.
Participate in Nurse-Led and multidisciplinary clinics, patient reviews and multidisciplinary team meetings, co-ordinating treatment independently or in conjunction with a wider multidisciplinary team.
Where needed conduct domiciliary visits for review, assessment and sample-taking
Use skills in history taking, examination and investigations to assess the health and well-being of clients.
Document clearly in paper based and electronic systems, ensuring all entries are accurate, legible, timely and in accordance with Trust standards
Provide a high quality service from diagnosis/referral through to assessment, treatment initiation and long-term follow up, referring to other specialists as required. Provide guidance to staff, patients, their families and carers on pathway navigation.
Communicate with clients/patients and their relatives/carers, GPs and other health professionals via telephone, email and letter, provide reports and liaise as required with medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team both verbally and in writing.
Contribute to the active engagement of service users through facilitation of client, carer and stakeholder feedback via user groups, open days, support groups. Ensure feedback informs service development
Act as an advocate for clients to ensure an individually focused approach to the delivery of care and service strategy .Support and enable clients and carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management
Provide non-judgemental and holistic care, having regard to individuals’ culture, beliefs, gender identity and sexual orientation.
Escalate concerns within multidisciplinary teams/management colleagues as required, maintaining an awareness that ethical dilemmas may require discussion through an agreed/defined process.
Advice on risk reduction, health promotion and prevention of illness, escalating concerns as required to appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Identify, report and raise concerns about Safeguarding via agreed protocols within Trust guidance. Maintain familiarity with Trust policies, procedures and systems for safeguarding including the assessment of Mental Capacity, the process for consideration requests for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) and the application of the principles of Prevent (counter terrorism awareness).
Be fully conversant and wholly accountable for own practice, acting and upholding the professional standards detailed within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for nurses and midwives.
Participate in reflection and feedback from colleagues and in annual appraisal process. Where required undertake appraisal of others and actions to support revalidation.
Take personal responsibility for attendance at mandatory/statutory training and updating as per Trust statutory and mandatory training requirements.
Adhere to Trust policies, ensuring a high standard of personal and professional behaviour is maintained at all times. Where required wear a uniform according to the Trust Dress Code.
The post holder will undertake other duties as may be required. The post holder may be deployed / expected to work in any part of the organisation should the need arise to ensure patient safety is maintained.
