Ben Charles Head of Foundation Job Description The King’s School, Worcester wishes to appoint an inspirational Hockey and Cricket Coach. Applicants should be able to deliver both sports to a high standard. They will have the ability to adapt to the needs of pupils while also being a great team player. The successful candidate will be a motivating coach who has the drive to help pupils of all abilities achieve at high levels, they will be someone who is passionate about sport, who has a love for learning and who wishes to share and develop that passion with enthusiastic and energetic young people. As part of our dedicated staff team, they will assist with the delivery of engaging coaching sessions, helping pupils develop fundamental skills in a supportive and inclusive environment. The role will be key in shaping positive sporting experiences that align with our school’s values. Please note that, ideally, we are looking to recruit a coach who is able to deliver both Hockey and Cricket for the duration of the fixed-term contract. For the right candidate, however, we would be prepared to consider coaches with either Hockey or Cricket specialism, and for alternative durations. In such cases, the ability to offer a further Sports specialism may be an advantage. Hours of work and contract: Up to 28 hours per week, including Saturdays. This role is a fixed term maternity cover role, anticipated to begin towards the end of January 2026. Sport at King’s At King’s Worcester we are passionate about sport and physical activity. We aim to deliver a premium sporting experience, within an environment of enjoyment, endeavour, and achievement. Our thriving sports provision for boys and girls embraces ‘Excellence’ and ‘Sport for All’ and we encourage all pupils to engage with the many sporting opportunities available, regardless of ability. We offer over fifteen different sports at specialist level in first class facilities with expert coaches. In addition to our core sports of Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Netball, Rowing, Football, Athletics, and Swimming, we also offer a range of other sports such as Basketball, Cross-Country, and Fencing. The standard of our competitive sport is very high and we are proud to have a number of keen sportspeople representing the county and achieving ongoing national successes. Hockey We have sixteen teams competing regularly each season. Matches take place on a weekly basis during Games afternoons and an extensive Saturday fixture list. Over 140 girls can be seen representing the school at this sport at any one time. Hockey is played across both the autumn and spring terms, with competitive matches and team training. King’s Hockey teams regularly compete in regional finals across all age ranges. We have strong club links with Worcester Hockey Club and Stourport Hockey Club and consistently produce a number of regional performers. In the past five years we have had two girls go on to represent their country at Hockey. Cricket Cricket has a long tradition of success at King’s Worcester. Many pupils, past and present, have represented Worcestershire at all age groups. The 1st XI play over twenty fixtures in a season against a variety of opposition, ranging from other schools to foreign touring sides, and a number of local men’s teams. All other age groups will put out an A and B team on Saturdays, as well as during Games afternoons. Coaching is of a very high standard. King’s is proud to have encouraged female Cricket for a number of years and girls actively play alongside boys in practices and fixtures. Job Description & Person Specification The main responsibilities are as follows: • Contribute to the delivery of Hockey and Cricket in the Senior School, reporting to the Director of Sport. • Aspire to ensure high standards are demonstrated by all pupils when training and participating in sports. • Be fully involved in the co-curricular programme including after-school practices and weekend fixtures. • Promote the health and safety of all pupils when participating in activities. • Actively promote and safeguard the welfare of all pupils, reporting any concerns in a timely manner. Person Specification It is expected that the Sports Coach will demonstrate a range of qualities, skills and experience: Experience and Knowledge • It would be an advantage to hold a Hockey or Cricket coaching qualification. • Knowledge, experience and understanding of player development. • Experience of working with high level performers is beneficial. • Proactively demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and commitment to a Sports Coach’s role in safeguarding young people. Skills and Qualities • Demonstrate a passion for Hockey and for Cricket, and for working with young people. • Ability to develop pupils’ technique, motivate and encourage high performance. • Ability to inspire and develop pupils so that they reach their full potential. • The ability to communicate effectively and with professionalism with staff, pupils, parents and other stakeholders at all times. • Great team player.
