Job overview

We are offering an opportunity for a highly competent candidate to work as a Research Nurse initially delivering the Stroke Research portfolio of studies. Candidates should be educated to degree level or significant equivalent experience.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary team in the co-ordination of clinical studies and ensure that local, national and international research regulations are adhered to with an express commitment to abide by the NHS values and the Constitution.
As a Research Nurse, the post holder will also continue to retain clinical skills and credibility by maintaining their practice as per governing body ensuring that professional standards of practice and behaviour are upheld and sufficient practice is undertaken in order to revalidate if required.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will learn to support the management and co-ordination of the cancer research portfolio studies, with support from senior research colleagues. This will involve providing effective, caring and compassionate services to patients who are participating in clinical research studies. The post holder is expected to complete procedures and investigations according to study protocol as well as Trust and local policies.

Procedures include identifying potential participants for recruitment, providing verbal and written information to explain the study, monitoring the participants’ progress, and collecting and collating patient data. Procedures will also include clinical practice such as clinical assessment, venepuncture and performing normal vital monitoring.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable and current experience in the NHS clinical environment as a registered nurse with recent clinical skills practice in a specialist area (Stroke).
  • Excellent IT skills with expertise in database management and a current knowledge of NIHR systems.
  • Ability to work independently with own initiative as well as within a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and evidence of being a completer finisher when it comes to project work/management and delivery of research.
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and coordinate work of self and others
  • Knowledge and experience of mentoring new/junior staff and supporting them with competency achievement.
  • Ability to work across boundaries, integrating with multidisciplinary staff in relation to different clinical situations.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of undertaking staff appraisal.
  • Delivery of research, experience with knowledge of processes, practice and governance.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to first degree level in a health related subject or significant equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development within current role
  • Current Good Clinical Practice certificate or willingness to complete

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of staff, patients and carers face to face, on the telephone or in writing.
  • Demonstrate initiative in resolving issues and problems.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, manage time effectively and work to tight deadlines, demonstrating good time management skills.
  • Builds and manages internal and external stakeholder relationships and exceeds patient and commissioner expectations by accurately assessing patient needs and ensuring delivery of commissioner requirements.
