About Us:
For over 130 years, Birmingham Dogs Home (BDH) has been caring for homeless and
unwanted dogs across the West Midlands and South Staffordshire. Every dog we rescue
deserves a second chance and our dedicated teams work tirelessly to help them heal, trust,
and find their forever homes.

We believe in compassionate care, positive training, and supporting both dogs and people to
build lifelong relationships. As part of our continued commitment to improving welfare and
reducing relinquishment, we are expanding our in-house behaviour and training expertise.

About the role:
We’re looking for an experienced and compassionate Canine Behaviour and Training Co-
ordinator to join our team and help shape the future of behavioural care across both our
centres.

You’ll lead on assessing dogs in our care, developing individualised training and
rehabilitation plans, and supporting our dedicated staff and volunteers to deliver consistent,
positive-reinforcement-based training.

Alongside your internal work, you’ll play an active role in delivering community classes and
behaviour advice services, helping to prevent unnecessary relinquishment, promote
responsible ownership, and generate income to support our charitable mission.

This is a hands-on, rewarding role for someone who is passionate about improving canine
welfare and building confidence in others.

What you’ll be doing:

• Carrying out behaviour assessments and developing tailored training and

rehabilitation plans.

• Coaching and mentoring staff and volunteers in positive handling and training

techniques.

• Delivering post-adoption support to owners, helping ensure successful rehoming

outcomes.

• Leading the development of BDH’s community training and behaviour services.
• Supporting educational workshops and public engagement events.
• Working collaboratively across both centres to embed best practice in all aspects of

behaviour and welfare.

About you:

You’ll be an enthusiastic and confident behaviour professional with a strong welfare ethos
and a genuine passion for rescue dogs. You’ll bring:

• Recognised dog training accreditation (ABTC Animal Trainer Standard or equivalent).
• Practical experience designing and implementing behaviour modification

programmes.

• A thorough understanding of learning theory and positive-reinforcement-based

methods.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to inspire confidence in others.

Desirable Qualifications:

• A degree-level qualification in animal behaviour or ABTC Behaviour Technician /

Clinical Animal Behaviourist status would be an advantage.

• Experience working in a similar environment, such as an animal shelter or charity

organisation.

• Full UK driving licence.

Why Join Us:

At BDH, you’ll be part of a passionate, supportive team who share your commitment to
improving dogs’ lives. We offer:

• A collaborative and inclusive working environment.
• Ongoing CPD and professional development support.
• The opportunity to shape and grow BDH’s behaviour and training services.
• The reward of making a genuine difference — every single day.
• 30 days holiday per year (including bank holidays).
• Pension scheme.
• Opportunity to work in a rewarding environment where your work makes a real

difference to the lives of dogs in need.
