Lecturer in Furniture

Are you passionate about craftsmanship and inspiring the next generation of furniture designers and makers?

Here at Coleg Sir Gar, we are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Lecturer in Furniture Design & Making to join our creative and committed team.

In this role, you’ll deliver high-quality teaching to learners at Level 2 and Level 3, taking responsibility for planning, assessing, and supporting their development in both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject.

As a Learning Area Programme Lead (LAP Leader), you’ll manage a cohort of learners, contribute to curriculum design, and play a key role in maintaining the quality of our provision through internal verification and continuous improvement. 

As part of the wider college community, you’ll be involved in personal tutoring, learner support, curriculum promotion, and the ongoing development of bilingual and employer-responsive education.

Key Responsibilities

You will be required to:

  • undertake the teaching, assessment and co-ordination of programmes of study leading to qualifications within Furniture Design & Making for level 2 and level 3.
  • take on the role of a Learning Area Programme Lead (LAP leader) for one cohort and contribute to the management of this subject area;
  • provide support, as a member of the team in the administration and resource development within the area;
  • assist in the provision of Furniture Design & Making through liaison with industry and in the potential development of commercial courses;
  • contribute to the quality of provision through the internal verification system;
  • prepare relevant teaching material for assigned subjects;
  • prepare resource materials and facilities in support of the assigned teaching;
  • undertake all assessment activity to assigned subjects;
  • ensure all classroom and practical training facilities comply with health and safety and other legislative requirements;
  • liaise with third party stakeholders as identified by faculty management, including, sector skills councils, HE institutions, industry bodies, employers etc.
  • organise work placement opportunities and monitor the learner experience;
  • carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  • Relevant degree or equivalent Higher Education/Advanced qualification
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • Teaching qualification ((If you are not in possession of a teaching qualification at the date of employment, you will be required to obtain a PGCE within 2 years of this date)
  • Relevant practical/industrial experience in Furniture Design, Making, Carpentry
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels both orally and in writing
  • Documented evidence of appropriate Professional Development
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with learners and colleagues
  • Excellent punctuality
  • Ability to work flexibly, under pressure and to tight deadlines

Desirable Criteria:

  • Relevant teaching experience
  • A good understanding of relevant issues in post 16 education
  • A proven track record of high levels of learner attainment
  • Awareness of key performance indicators
  • Evidence of innovative teaching and learning activities
  • Evidence of effective tracking and monitoring of 
    learner performance
  • Experience of actively participating in the pastoral care of young people
  • Sound understanding of digital literacy

Welsh Language Requirements:

  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1 Desirable
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1 Desirable
