About the role
We have 2 posts available across adult services at Southern Hospice Group based at St Barnabas House in Worthing and Martlets in Brighton and Hove with in-reach sessions to University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. These roles are substantive. Applications for 1 year fixed term post also welcomed.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our restructured senior clinical leadership team across Southern Hospice Group, working with our partners across health and social care to deliver specialist palliative care services from St Barnabas House, Martlets and Chestnut Tree House hospices. Southern Hospice Group consists of one children’s and two adult hospices.
These posts will be adult hospice posts with the opportunity to be involved in transitional care for young adults. We have adult inpatient units at St Barnabas in Worthing and Martlets in Hove, each housing 8 specialist and up to 6 nurse-led All Age Continuing Care beds; a community team; hospice at home and living well services. Services are supported by multiprofessional teams with nursing, medical, therapy, social work, chaplaincy and counselling dedicated input. Successful applicants will be assigned a primary site of work and there will be opportunities for working across both adult hospices with an expectation to contribute to internal cross cover to maintain patient safety and service delivery. The proportion of time spent at each site will vary depending on the total number of PAs in your job plan.
These posts also offer the exciting opportunity to lead a hospital in-reach and liaison pilot following a successful bid to the Sussex Cancer Alliance. We have a well-established history of working with colleagues across the NHS and social care sector to facilitate access to specialist palliative care in the appropriate setting. However, pathways where they exist are predominantly unfunded and may need to adapt in line with the NHS 10 year plan shift to Neighbourhood Health. These posts will both include up to 2 PAs (or 20% of job plan) to focus on identifying better ways of working to reduce reliance on the acute sector for specialist palliative care patients working alongside an advance nurse practitioner.
St Barnabas House and Martlets are training hospices and offer ample opportunity to participate in education programmes for all levels of healthcare professionals both internally through our education department and teaching for medical students from Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Across the group we clinically and/or educationally supervise Foundation Year 1, Internal Medicine Trainees, Palliative Medicine Registrar and GP Integrated training posts. Consultants will be expected to participate in the rewarding training and development of the medical workforce.
Responsibilities of the posts include active involvement with audit and clinical governance and involvement in research will be encouraged. The senior medical team contribute to and lead on aspects of clinical governance working alongside a multiprofessional leadership team across Southern Hospice Group. The post holders will provide medical leadership and work alongside multiprofessional colleagues to lead and develop aspects of service delivery as we continue the process of integrating our clinical services post-merger, develop our group strategy and collaborate with the wider health system to deliver safe, effective, innovative and efficient care.
Applicants must be fully registered and licensed with the GMC and on the Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine or have a completion of training date no more than 6 months after interview.
