Sheltered accommodation

The Foundation has 94 almshouses in and around Cambridge. A team of Wardens regularly visit
Chesterton and Melbourn and an emergency care call system is available in every flat and bungalow.

Storey’s House

These 47 one-bedroom flats for women are set in beautifully landscaped
gardens and are within walking distance of the picturesque Cambridge city
centre and the University Backs.

The charity’s Main Office and Warden team are based here.

New Court & Cannon Court, Chesterton

This accommodation is for both men and women. It is a short walk from
Logan’s Meadow Nature Reserve and the Equiano Bridge, linking Chesterton
with Riverside and the south bank of the River Cam.

There are 31 one-bedroom flats and a communal day room.

Vicarage Close, Melbourn

Close to the village centre of Melbourn, near Royston, lie eight bungalows,
each with two bedrooms and their own garden.

Priority at Vicarage Close is given to women who have been closely
associated with the work of the Church of England.

Mount Pleasant, opposite Storey’s House

Here, two attractive Victorian houses have been converted into four one-
bedroom flats for women who have been closely associated with the work of
the Church of England.

Residents each have their own small garden to tend and they also have
access to all the communal facilities of Storey’s House.

Mill End Road, Cherry Hinton

The Foundation has two one-bedroom bungalows for men and women,
where people with links to Cherry Hinton have priority.

Eligibility for housing

The Foundation of Edward Storey was
established in 1693 by the will of
Edward Storey, a wealthy Cambridge
bookseller.

The Foundation remains true to its
founder’s concerns: most of our
residents are women, and all have
strong links with either Cambridgeshire
or the Church of England.

In addition, applicants need to be:

· single
· over 60 years old (in exceptional
cases, applicants over 50 may be
considered for a Cannon Court
flat)

· capable of living independently
·
in financial need, taking into
account income, savings and any
property owned

The Foundation welcomes individuals
receiving Housing Benefit or the
housing element of Universal Credit.

Application process

We encourage people to come and
look around the almshouses before
applying.

We have an application form, and a
trustee will also meet with an applicant
before they are approved.

The Foundation operates a waiting list
with vacancies being filled on the basis
of greatest need at that time.
