Primary
Responsibilities: To assist with the maintenance and restoration of the railway’s fleet of carriages and

wagons.
To work on assigned projects that have been agreed by the Carriage & Wagon Manager

To work with other members of the department and other departments as needed to
ensure safe, reliable and well presented rolling stock are available for use.
To assist in performing suitable tasks related to Fitness to Run inspections.

To shunt or undertake other suitable operational duties

C&W Fitter – Performance Requirement

Responsibilities (in addition to the Primary Responsibilities above)

1.  To undertake maintenance tasks on  the regularly  used carriage  fleet of British Rail Mark  1  and other

stock. This will involve some level of autonomy in fault finding and rectification.
Areas of work include (but not limited to;)

a.  Running & braking gear
b.  Electrical systems (24v & 230v)
c.  Carriage door & window maintenance
d.  Plumbing in catering vehicles
e.  Painting & varnishing
f.
Interior woodwork
g.  Steam heating systems
h.  Departmental wagons

2.  To perform tasks related to periodical fitness to run examinations of carriages & wagons, and accurately

record findings in the appropriate way.

3.  To assist in restoration of all rolling stock under the remit of the C&W department.

Areas of work include (but not limited to;)

a.  Metalwork
b.  Woodwork
c.  Painting
d.  Plumbing
e.  Electrical works
f.  Upholstery
g.  Flooring
h.  Heavier Engineering (bogies etc)

4.  To work closely with the railway’s small team of paid staff and broader team of volunteers and to respect

their varying levels of skills and fitness.

5.  To lead & support teams of volunteers on certain tasks.

6.  To follow all railway rules appropriate for the role.

7.  To use railway resources and tools appropriately. There is a well provisioned workshop within the Embsay

station site and all equipment is to be treated with respect.

8.  To undertake relevant training when required.
9.  Assist with covering operational roles where required and when competent to do so.

Overall, the job is suitable for someone who likes to be hands on, investigate and fix problems and can take
time to come to a thorough solution.

The job is not suitable for someone who prefers to cut corners and pass problems on to others.

Accountability

The postholder is accountable to the Carriage & Wagon Manager.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its staff and visitors.    All staff are
expected to share this same level of commitment.    The role may require the post-holder to be in a position
of responsibility with respect to young persons or to vulnerable adults and may, subject to requirements,
require an enhanced Criminal Records check.

The role of Carriage & Wagon Fitter is designated as a Safety Critical role, and the postholder is required
to  carry  out  safety  critical  activities.      The  successful  candidate  will  be  required  to  complete  the  Trust’s
Medical Questionnaire Form and may also, at the Board’s discretion, be expected to undertake and to pass
an appropriate medical examination carried out by the Company’s appointed Medical Practitioner.

The role is also entitled to non-safeguarded “Priv Travel” on the national railway network for so long as such
concession is granted to us.
