About the role

Are you a dedicated and experienced Healthcare Assistant (HCA) ready to take the next meaningful step in your career? If you're already in a leadership role and looking to specialise in palliative care, we’d love to hear from you.

At Saint Michael’s Hospice in Harrogate, we’re committed to providing expert, compassionate care to people at the end of life. As part of our Inpatient Unit team, you’ll have the opportunity to make a genuine difference, supporting patients and their families with empathy, dignity, and respect in a peaceful and welcoming environment.

We're currently seeking a Senior Team HCA to take on a vital leadership role. This position offers the chance to guide and inspire a team, contribute to service development, and provide high-quality, person-centred care at one of life’s most important stages.

Your Role as a Senior Healthcare Assistant

  • Lead and coordinate clinical shifts on the inpatient unit, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care delivery.
  • Line manage, supervise, and mentor HCA and nursing staff, promoting a positive culture of teamwork and professional development.
  • Support and guide students and junior colleagues in their learning and practice.
  • Deliver and support training and competency-based development within the care team.
  • Help implement best practices in complex and specialist palliative care.
  • Take a lead role in assessments, planning, and delivery of individualised care in collaboration with patients, families, and the wider team.
  • Manage complex symptoms and provide end-of-life care with skill, sensitivity, and compassion.
  • Actively contribute to continuous service improvement and quality initiatives.
  • Be a visible role model for excellence in person-centred care.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re seeking someone who brings both heart and leadership to the role:

  • Significant experience in palliative care, oncology, or an acute clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and experience managing clinical teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence and emotional resilience in handling complex or sensitive situations.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective practice.
  • Experience delivering individualised care in dynamic, needs-led environments such as ward or complex community settings.
  • Ideally, you'll have a background in managing ward logistics or leading within a specialist care area.
  • Evidence of formal training or continued professional development in care, particularly palliative care.

At Saint Michael’s Hospice, we believe working in end-of-life care is more than just a job, it’s a vocation. If you are ready to bring comfort, dignity, and peace to those who need it most and to support others doing the same we’d love for you to join us.
