We advocate for the right to health, in terms of both physicaland mental health, for vulnerable people excluded from health care. This includes peoplewho have migrated, people experiencing homelessness, Gypsies, Roma, and Travelercommunities. Conflict and crisis We provide life-saving humanitarian healthcare in times of war andnatural disasters. We’ve deployed medical teams all over the world to deal with theconsequences of wars, natural disasters, and epidemics, taking all measures necessary tosupport the existing health systems in remaining open through the crisis.Refugees and Migrants We empower migrants to access quality healthcare, regardless ofimmigration status or reason for fleeing. Harm reduction We support those who are vulnerable due to high risk behaviours.Especially those at risk from HIV or hepatitis C, such as drug users and sex workers. Sexual and reproductive Health We believe strongly in the right to sexual and reproductivehealth, and work to empower women and girls around the world to access sexual andreproductive health services. Our Priority AreasOur work in the UKEveryone living in the UK has the right to free primary care, no matter who they are or whattheir immigration status may be. Yet many people still face significant barriers to registeringwith a GP and obtaining an NHS number. GP practices often request proof of address or ID,and those unable to provide these documents are too often – and wrongly – turned away. Our mission is simple: ensure everyone can access safe, continuous healthcare by helpingthem register with an NHS GP and provide immediate, compassionate care when they cannot.Other obstacles include limited language support, a lack of clear information about healthcarerights, laws that restrict access to free hospital care for people without status, discrimination, fear of arrest or immigration enforcement, and practical issues such as limited internet accessor phone credit.Through our support services, more than 90% of the people who come to us are ultimatelyable to register safely with a GP. The need is urgent: 70% of our clients are homeless orvulnerably housed, and 84% live below the poverty line. For more information on our work and impact, click here.5What we doAdvocacy & Policy Change: Our UK advocacy is at the heart of our mission. Drawing on patientexperiences and our own research, we challenge policies that restrict access to care, opposecharging in primary care, campaign against immigration enforcement in the NHS, and push fornational reforms that protect the right to healthcare for all.Direct Support: Our mobile clinics, advice line, and outreach teams provide free primaryhealthcare, rights-based guidance, and support to help people register with an NHS GP andaccess specialist services. Last year alone, our advice line managed nearly 8,000 contacts frompeople seeking support to access the care they are entitled to.Training & System Change: Through our Safe Surgeries initiative and NHS trainingprogrammes, we equip doctors, nurses, and administrative staff with the tools they need todeliver inclusive, non-discriminatory care.6How we helpDoctors of the World UK (DOTW) is part of the global Médecins du Monde (MdM) network, which delivers over 400 projects in more than 70 countries, from Gaza and Ukraine, toMyanmar, Greece, DRC, Italy, and Nepal. We deliver both emergency and planned medicalcare, staying to support people for the long term. We advocate directly for the rights ofeveryone to access healthcare, no matter who they are or where they are from.In the UK, we deliver our own domestic programme supporting people excluded fromhealthcare, including people seeking asylum and those experiencing homelessness, andcall for an end to health inequalities to ensure access to healthcare for all.We take a holistic, person-centred approach. Our teams explore each individual’s housingsituation, immigration status, physical and mental health, family circumstances andsafeguarding concerns. We help people understand their healthcare rights, navigate GPregistration, and access services confidently and safely. For many who have experiencedtrauma or fear official systems, building trust and dignity is a vital part of the care weprovide.Job descriptionReports to: Board of Trustees (Company Directors)Location: Hybrid (London offices in Stratford/home, with UK and international travel as required)Job PurposeThe ED champions universal access to healthcare as a fundamental human right and ensuresorganisational strategies uphold equality, dignity, and non-discrimination.
