Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Mathematics to start in January or April 2026.
The Department
Mathematics is one of the most popular and successful academic subjects at Brighton. The department consists of members of staff from a number of different backgrounds, ranging from recent graduates to those with over two decades of experience. The common denominator being a love of mathematics and the ability to pass that joy on to the pupils.
The subject is taught throughout Years 7 to 11 in classes which generally range in size between 15 and 25. All pupils take Edexcel IGCSE Maths in Year 11, with around 100 also taking the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths. Around 200 will take A-level maths in Year 13 this year, of which two fifths will also take A-level further maths. We follow the Edexcel home syllabus for both the single and further A-level.
The results in recent years have been excellent, with the pupils regularly achieving 100% 9-6 at IGCSE including 64% grade 9. At A-level, 98% a chieved A*-B in both single and further maths, with well over 50% achieving an A* grade. The department also has a comprehensive Oxbridge programme, with much recent success in this area.
Recent years have seen record numbers of pupils achieving Gold Awards at all levels of the UKMT Maths Challenges, as well as reaching and succeeding in follow-on rounds such as the BMO, reflecting the emphasis on extension and enrichment within the department. Irrespective of background or experience, each member of the department is expected to be a reflective and forward looking practitioner.
The department is housed in a purpose built teaching block, finished in September 2017, which has enables the development of innovative teaching practices. The department has also been at the forefront of the school’s development in the use of Microsoft Surfaces as a teaching and learning aid, although candidates are not expected to immediately be proficient in this area.
Role SpecificationThe successful candidate will be expected to teach Maths across the curriculum, from Year 7 to A-level. They will be eager to contribute to the department's programme of activities, which encompasses extension for eager pupils of all ages as well as support for those finding the subject tough.
All teachers within the department are expected to assist in the development of schemes of work, as well as in the creation of teaching resources and the compilation of content for our Microsoft OneNote Notebooks and SharePoint.
Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day). There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of almost 100 school societies.
Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our supercurricular Masterclass programme; this is a series of sessions focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.
All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.

There is also an excellent and flexible benefits package, the contents of which can be controlled by individual teachers themselves. Generous fee remission is also available for dependent children in either the Prep School or College, subject to a place being offered.
