Age UK York is a local charity passionate about supporting older people in York to live more rewarding lives through practical support and advice.
You should be confident in conversing with people, some of whom have hearing or cognition difficulties, by telephone, online, and face-to-face. You will need to build up knowledge in a wide range of information and advice topics ranging from where to go to for help with a Blue Badge form to understanding the Care Act and providing advice on this. Some experience of working in the area of welfare benefits or a keen interest in this area is also essential as we spend a lot of time advising on benefits, calculating and assessing entitlement to benefits, and helping complete claim forms. You should have good attention to detail and be confident in managing a varied caseload, including keeping up to date comprehensive notes this is essential as your work will be audited by our assessors to achieve the Advice Quality Standard national accreditation.
Extensive training in the above is provided and you should be keen to learn.
Lone working is required, as is access to transport - you will be required to travel within City of York boundaries to see people in community venues or their home environment, as well as working from our office in Margaret Street, York.
We focus on doing the best for our service users and colleagues. You'd be joining a friendly team both in the Information and Advice Service and the wider organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide information and advice to older people and their carers and relatives on a wide range of topics including welfare benefits, housing, community care, disability rights and other issues.
Carry out benefits checks and advise clients accurately and clearly about their entitlements; assist people in making the necessary claims including form filling.
Keep up-to-date, comprehensive, accurate case records using Age UK York’s Charity Log database.
Maintain an awareness of current local and national issues affecting older people where necessary, researching new information and resources, also work with partner agencies relevant to our client group
Take part in colleague discussions as part of peer review to assess our work as part of our need to improve and achieve quality
Take part in Outreach work in our communities
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
You should be a confident communicator to delivering information & advice to people
A working knowledge of welfare benefits is desirable/ an interest in this area is essential, this includes how to calculate and make benefit claims
You should have experience of writing case notes, using databases, word, excel and outlook
You should have access to transport to carry out home visits in City of York boundary area
