Description of Post

The post holder working as part of the wider team with their Consultants colleagues will grow and strengthen the Geriatric Service within the Medical Department at Letterkenny University Hospital.

There are five Consultant Geriatrician posts at Letterkenny University Hospital, one of which provides Consultant Services to the Integrated Care Programme for Older Persons a half time basis whilst the other four posts provide specialist geriatric care to older persons admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital, whilst also contributing to acute medicine service delivery.

The Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine will:

Contribute to the General Medical an on-call service at Letterkenny University Hospital (currently on a 1:13 basis).

Provide an acute general medicine/geriatric medicine inpatient service at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Provide 2 specialist geriatric outpatient clinics per week at Letterkenny University Hospital Outpatients Department.

Provide a specialist geriatric medicine consult service within Letterkenny University Hospital.

Support the Clinical Nurse Specialist and Advanced Nurse Practitioner of The Older Person within Letterkenny University Hospital.

Work with colleagues in the integrated care hubs for older persons to develop care pathways to promote seamless integration of care for patients

Sit on committees related to older person services e.g. falls, frailty, end of life, medication safety, within Letterkenny University Hospital.

Essential Qualifications

Professional Qualifications

Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialties of geriatric medicine and general (internal) medicine.

Salary

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:

€233,527     €246,150      €259,475     €266,489     €273,501     €280,513

Incremental credit is awarded in respect of previous experience at Consultant level.
