Make a real difference in your community
Are you a visionary digital leader who thrives on driving change and inspiring others? Do you want the freedom to modernise an organisation and deliver technology that directly improves the lives of vulnerable people?
At Waythrough (formerly Humankind, Richmond Fellowship, and Aquarius), we support over 125,000 people every year across mental health, housing, substance misuse, and community services. We are one of England’s largest mental health and social support charities.
This is more than an IT leadership role — it’s an opportunity to shape the future digital landscape of a national charity.
About the Role
As Director of IT & Digital, you will set the vision and lead our organisation-wide digital and technology strategy, ensuring our systems, tools, and platforms truly enable our frontline teams to transform lives.
You will lead three strategic functions:
- IT Operations— infrastructure, cyber security, governance
- Technology Change & Digital Innovation— delivery of digital tools, including our ERP programme
- IT Service Delivery— service desk, support, and the public-facing side of IT
This role reports directly to the Executive Director of Partnerships, Innovation & Business Development.
What You’ll Do
- Lead Waythrough’s IT & Digital strategy, ensuring secure, scalable, and resilient systems.
- Build and develop a high-performing leadership team (3 direct reports / ~26 indirect reports).
- Lead digital innovation — identifying tools that improve frontline delivery and efficiency.
- Establish and lead the new PMO, ensuring consistent delivery of major programmes.
- Oversee a multi-million-pound budget, contracts, and vendor relationships.
- Champion modern digital adoption and culture change across a diverse workforce.
- Influence and engage senior stakeholders up to Board level.

To Succeed In This Role, You’ll Need
- Experience operating at strategic leadership level (Head of / Director / CTO / CIO level).
- A track record of digital transformation and leading multi-site IT functions.
- Strong leadership, stakeholder management and the ability to inspire teams.
- Ability to translate complex IT language into business-focused outcomes.
- Experience overseeing large-scale technology programmes and organisational change.
Desirable (not essential):
- Project Management (PRINCE2 / Agile)
- ITIL or cyber security governance exposure
- Experience working in health, social care, charity, or regulated environments
We welcome applicants from any sector — we care about capability, not industry background.

About Us
Waythrough launched in October 2024 following the merger of Humankind and Richmond Fellowship.
Our vision is to break down the barriers that stop people getting the support they need to live a life they value. We tackle poverty and disadvantage in communities, through mental health, drug and alcohol, housing and related support.
We have almost 200 services around England – and nearly 3,500 amazing staff and volunteers who run them. Every year our services support around 125,000 people.
Bringing together two big organisations is not a small task and it’ll take a while to fully integrate our systems, processes and approaches. That’s why you will notice the jobs here are still branded ‘Richmond Fellowship’ or ‘Aquarius’ (our subsidiary charity in the Midlands). Next year we’ll be fully integrating our recruitment systems but for now they are separate.
Thanks for bearing with us – and don’t forget to check out the Waythrough jobs on the Humankind job site https://peoplekind.my.salesforce-sites.com/recruit/
Aquarius
Aquarius is a subsidiary of Waythrough. Aquarius is a Midlands-based charity supporting individuals to overcome the harms caused by drugs, alcohol and gambling. Aquarius has always held the view that people we support could resolve their problems with support and guidance and that people have the ability to find their own solutions to their problems. Our roles across the organisation include Practitioners and Administrators as well as Team Managers.
