We are always on the look out for passionate Session Leaders to deliver our impactful programmes. You will play a direct part in achieving our goal of supporting more young people as you deliver after school learning sessions. If you’ve got experience facilitating or leading groups and are motivated by making in impact, we’d love to hear from you!
Skills & Experience We’re Looking For
We are looking for candidates who are a good fit in terms of attributes and attitude, and who are keen to learn and gain experience. These attributes include:
- Can independently deliver sessions from a session plan.
- Enjoys working with children.
- Can balance a warm but structured approach that helps children have fun but stay safe and kind.
- Has a positive approach to handling learning and behaviour with children.
- Models inclusion and values diversity.
- Is motivated by improving outcomes for children with fewer opportunities.
- Is energised by a busy and changeable environment.
- Reflects on how things can improve and takes initiative to find solutions.
- Is tenacious and resilient.
- Communicates confidently with people from a range of different backgrounds.
- Manages time well and can prioritise and get things done in a busy environment.
While certain experiences will be helpful, we are not looking for a specific set of experience. Consider any experiences you have from work, study, volunteering or personal projects and how these might demonstrate you have the right attributes and the ability to learn and perform in the role.
Essential:
- Leading groups of children in workshops, sessions or similar.
Other relevant experience may include:
- Experience of session content related to ours – for example literacy or learning content.
- Experience of online learning.
- Experience of informal learning environments.
- Experience of the communities we work in.
- Experience of working with children with barriers to learning.
Role Description
You will be working in the team to deliver daily reading and writing sessions to pupils in years 5-8. Your timetable will include days when you lead session and days when you support session.
As Session Leader:
- Leading learning activities on our Virtual ship and in person in Hackney.
- Leading termly celebration events to launch Young Pirate products.
- Briefing and supporting volunteer crewmates in session.
- Deliver monitoring and evaluation activities to check progress.
As Session Support:
- Greeting and registering Young Pirates.
- Completing session admin.
- Troubleshooting tech issues with Young Pirates.
- Liaising on the day with schools and families as required.
- Providing extra support to learning activities in session.
- Leading breaktime.
- Debriefing with volunteers and taking feedback and safeguarding concerns.
Behaviour, wellbeing and safeguarding:
- Creating a safe and joyful environment in session for all Young Pirates to thrive.
- Implementing the behaviour, attendance and wellbeing processes including reporting and following up on concerns.
- Follow the Safeguarding policy and uphold high standards of safeguarding in everything you do.
- Follow the Equity Diversity and Inclusion to uphold high standards of inclusion in everything you do.
Other activities to support the programme:
- Engaging families with supportive communication about progress and behaviour.
- Providing feedback on progress including writing teacher and family reports.
- Striving to continually improve practice by taking part in Quality Assurance activities.
- Representing the programme to visitors including teachers, funders and families.
- Supporting the delivery of publishing projects.
- Other activities to support the impactful running of the learning programme.
