About FRS

Finchley Reform Synagogue (FRS) is a vibrant and diverse Reform community based inNorth London. Our informal and inclusive approach, along with innovative and dynamicmethods, make FRS a shining light in British Jewry. FRS looks to the needs of itsmembers at all stages of their lives: it becomes the ‘constant’ for them, celebrating with

them and comforting them, teaching and learning with them, encouraging them toparticipate fully in the life of the community no matter what their heritage or level of Jewish understanding.

Role purpose

The Communications Officer supports connection and engagement across ourcommunity by keeping people informed, involved, and inspired. By using ourcommunication channels effectively—both internal and external—the CommunicationsOfficer ensures our values, activities, and events are clearly and consistently shared with the community and external audiences.

Key Responsibilities

1. Community Communications

● Prepare and publish the weekly e-newsletter – collate information and material, proofread, format, and schedule for release.

● Prepare and format the weekly At-A-Glance leafet

● Create targeted communications for events, festivals, and programmes.

● Draft and deliver one-off communications for major events (e.g. High Holy Days, festivals, AGM, etc, monthly)

● Manage the communications action plan for High Holy Days and other major events.

● Check that our communications meet communications accessibility standards e.g. make sure that all images have descriptive alternative text.

2. Website & Digital Platforms

● Maintain and develop the synagogue website:

○ Add and update event listings (including Jewish holidays).

○ Review website pages to identify out of date content.

○ Refresh and update content to ensure accuracy and relevance.

● Use the ShulCloud system to build forms for bookings, choices and payments (training provided).

● Track bookings and registrations via the website.

● Stay up to date with comms and marketing related ShulCloud features to helpFRS make optimal use of the platform.

3. Social Media

● Manage FRS social media accounts (especially Facebook & Instagram).

● Develop a stream of engaging and varied content to promote events andcommunity life.

● Ensure cross-posting of Kindergarten content and support their presence within FRS channels.

● Keeping up to date with social media trends and making suggestions to the FRS team about new ways to use technology and social media.

4. Internal Displays & Publicity

● Update the pre-service screen slides weekly with events, celebrations (simchas) and announcements.

● Support marketing for flagship moments and internal campaigns witheye-catching visuals and effective messaging.

● Support planning and scheduling of communications timelines for keycampaigns and events.

5. Publications & Volunteer Engagement

● Help produce the schedule for the Tree of Life magazine (twice annually), then

track the tasks required and make sure the people involved meet the agreed

deadlines.:

○ Work with volunteers to source articles, photographs and content

○ Liaise with third party advertising sources and and act as key Point of Contact,

○ Liaise with the printer and ensure lead times are communicated to the office team and any contributors,

○ Act as Point of Contact for the proof-reading ‘team’,

○ Liaise with the designer who is responsible for the layout and design

● Support ad-hoc publication design and formatting needs.

● Work with others to develop a team of volunteer contributors and proofreadersto assist with ongoing communications.

6. Marketing & Branding

● Assist team members with using Canva effectively.

● Support internal stakeholders with marketing collateral for Kindergarten, venue hire and other initiatives.

● Guiding the FRS team in how to adhere to FRS brand guidelines across all platforms

● Help make sure that FRS communications are aligned with our values.

Carry out any other reasonable duties which might be expected as part of this role. Whilst this is not essential to the role, we know that building relationships withcommunity members by attending events, shabbat and festival services makes it easierto achieve the tasks.

Essential skills, experience and abilities

● Experience in communications, marketing and/or digital content (paid orvoluntary)

● Copywriting, proofreading and editing

● Ability to tailor messages for different audiences

● High confidence/skills in computer programmes and apps e.g. microsoft products, design software e.g. canva, website software, membership databasese.g. shulcloud (or able to learn quickly)

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure and to a tight deadline

● High attention to detail and accuracy

Desirable skills, experience and abilities

● Website management, design and development (or ability to learn quickly)

● Knowledge of data protections practices and policies (or ability to learn)

● Understanding of inclusive and accessible communications standards andpractices.

● Show enthusiasm about building community and working as part of a team

● Be willing to learn and take initiative

● Be open-minded, adaptable, diplomatic and respectful of diversity

● Have the humility to learn, ask for advice and support when required. it is an advantage if you have:

● Understanding of the UK Jewish community, in particular, how synagoguesoperate

● Experience of working within a charity, not-for-profit or membership organisation.
