Located in the heart of South Hertfordshire's thriving Jewish community, Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue (BES) is the largest community within the United Synagogue. Set within our own Eruv and surrounded by Jewish schools, shops and eateries, BES has become home to over 1,000 children and youth across our two vibrant sites – BES@Croxdale and BES@Yavneh.
As our community continues to flourish, we are seeking two dynamic Youth Directors to inspire and engage young people aged 11-18 through innovative programming that combines authentic Jewish life with exciting social and educational experiences.
What We're Looking For
We need passionate individuals who can lead engaging Shabbat and Yom Tov services, deliver thought-provoking educational sessions, and create memorable events that foster community spirit. The ideal candidates will have experience working with youth, strong communication skills, and the ability to connect with both religious and non-committed young people.
Essential skills include the ability to lead prayer services confidently, experience in youth programming, and a deep understanding of Orthodox Judaism and Jewish values. Leining ability is desirable but not essential.
The Role
Part-time positions (12 hours per week) including Shabbat and festival services
Salary: £10,608 per annum (pro rata from £30,940)
Your time will be divided between Shabbat programming (35%), educational activities (30%), festival programming (20%), and community outreach (15%). You'll work closely with our Rabbinic Team and liaise with Tribe, the United Synagogue's youth division.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
• To develop youth programmes that will engage young people aged 11-18 in our shul community across both BES sites
• To attract as many of the BES-affiliated youth as possible to both regular and one-off activities on Shabbat/festivals and other times when appropriate
• To inspire and enhance young members' connections with vibrant, authentic Jewish life through educational and social events
• To engender a spirit of achdut and community responsibility amongst our young members
• To liaise with Tribe, the United Synagogue’s youth division and other youth directors to deliver creative, exciting, and engaging programmes for young people in our shul
• To nurture our youth to be leaders for the next generation
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Youth Engagement
• Build meaningful relationships with young members aged 11-18, ensuring they feel included and valued.
• Be present and actively engaged in the community every Shabbat in Borehamwood.
• Reach out and develop relationships with non-engaged youth
2. Religious Leadership
• Responsible for overseeing and facilitating engaging Shabbat and Yom Tov programming, including weekly Shabbat morning and Yom Tov services for those in school years 7-13
• Lead prayer services in an engaging and relatable way for young people.

3. Educational Programming
• Organise and lead weekly discussions on thought-provoking, age-appropriate Jewish and contemporary topics.
• To be able to tailor programming and events for specific age ranges — e.g., years 7-9, 10-11, 12-13 etc.
4. Event Coordination
• Plan and execute exciting and dynamic events that foster community spirit and participation among young people.
• Coordinate events relating to festivals throughout the year, for example, prefestival events, Chanukah party etc
5. Administrative Responsibilities
• To attend meetings and training seminars specific to Youth Directors and Youth leaders in similar roles within the Tribe framework.
• Responsible for maintaining a pragmatic budget
• To liaise regularly with line managers and the Rabbinic Team regarding all events for the youth of the community
• To ensure that all appropriate United Synagogue Health & Safety and Child Protection protocols have been followed for all events held either in or out of the synagogue, and all appropriate documentation is filed accordingly
OTHER
• You will be expected to undertake the above role to comply with any policies and procedures that United Synagogue may issue.
• Any other reasonable duty as may be assigned that is consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility.
ALLOCATION OF TIME AND RESPONSIBILITIES (A LEVEL OF FLEXIBILITY WILL BE REQUIRED)
35% – Shabbat programming and activities
30% – Educational and social programming
20% – Chagim (festival programming)

PERSON SPECIFICATION
The person/people appointed to this post should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Proven experience of successfully working in a Youth and Community Work setting on a full or part-time basis running programmes
- Ability to lead prayer services confidently
- Leining ability, where relevant (desirable)
- Creative with own ideas for programmes and activities
- Have experience in working successfully with both religious and non-religious and/or non-committed youth
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Have the knowledge and experience to give shiurim and lead discussions at a range of levels up to youth in the sixth form (desirable)
- Excellent planning and organising skills with ability to balance a number of priorities
- Excellent understanding of younger people's issues
- Proven experience as a proactive team member contributing to the success of the wider team and organisational goals
- Have a good understanding of the Jewish Community, Judaism and Jewish Values
- Be fully committed to the philosophy and practice of Orthodox Judaism
- Ability to motivate affiliated and non-affiliated youth
- Understand empowerment of young people and put this into practice together with a willingness to ask for and listen to ideas and feedback
- Charismatic, outgoing, and approachable personality
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with youth
- Passionate about Jewish life and values
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills, be articulate and selfmotivated and have the self-confidence to build and maintain strong relationships. Strong team player and be able to integrate themselves into community
- Experience in organising engaging events and discussions for young people
