We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Bursar/Assistant Management Accountant to join our small friendly team.  You will possess strong financial and management accounting skills, be a self-starter and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will be pro-active and have proven experience in providing professional support at Senior level in a business or school environment.  You will have good IT skills, particularly Excel and experience of accounting software, with the ability to analyse and interpret data effectively to prepare detailed reports based on statistical analysis and findings.

The successful candidate will have very high standards of accuracy, be able to communicate easily with parents, staff and pupils and have a good understanding of bookkeeping, data protection and handling of sensitive information.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have:

  • Experience of producing management accounts, budgetary estimates, reports, cash flow and financial and statistical summaries
  • Experience of the principles and methods of book-keeping and its adaptation to various purposes, including the preparation of final accounts
  • AAT Level 3 qualified or equivalent
  • Minimum A level standard, including 5 GCSEs (9-5/ A*-C) including Maths and English

We are seeking an Exams Invigilator/Scribe/Reader for the Summer term exams. Working on a casual basis during the mock season in February and then May and June each year, the exact dates are determined once the relevant exam boards publish the timetable and will be confirmed with as much notice as possible.

For 2025, we anticipate that this will be between 3 February – 14 February and then 8 May to 24 June 2025. We would like a minimum commitment of 10 sessions/30 hours during these dates, and there will be up to 40 sessions/120 hours available.

Role Summary

Working with the Examinations Officer and invigilation team to ensure the correct procedures and regulations are followed to ensure the integrity of the exam at all times. To provide scribe and /or reader support to eligible students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for who you are responsible and with whom you come into contact
  • As a Reader, support allocated students within the exam room, (no more than 4 students per reader) by reading any instructions or questions requested by the student or by reading a student’s answer back to them if requested
  • As a Scribe, produce an accurate and verbatim transcript of answers dictated by the student in a handwritten format (always 1:1 support)
  • Attend regular training sessions for exam invigilators, readers and scribes, both face to face and online
  • Be familiar with the JCQ guidelines on exams
  • Follow instructions given by the Exams Officer
  • To assist with the preparation of the examination rooms ensuring that all awarding body requirements are met

Role Summary

The financial management of the School is delegated to the Bursar who works in close consultation with the Headteacher and the Chair of the Governors’ Finance Committee. The Assistant Bursar will support this role with the following areas of responsibility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Finance and Financial Reporting

Termly production of management accounts, including variance and trend analysis, five-year cash flows and other financial information. Any additional schedules required by the Bursar, SLT and Governing Board to facilitate strategy development, forecasting of income, evaluation of financial performance, budgeting and decision making.

Budget and forecast preparation, modelling pupil numbers and fee increases to provide reliable management information for decision making.

Management of cash resources and monitoring of bank balances and deposit accounts, including weekly preparation of rolling cash forecast. Identifying appropriate cash utilisation and assisting the Bursar to develop cash flow strategies, including investments and loans, to meet future requirements.

Be responsible for the collection and banking of payments into the school’s bank account.

Maintain fixed assets register. Post depreciation journals termly as required.

Capital Projects. To advise on financial implications of capital projects and new initiatives and report on the expenditure to date compared to in year budget. Calculate future project budgets and predicted impact on school cash flow.

The timely preparation and submission of all financial returns required by HMRC (in respect of payroll, corporation tax) and pension agencies.

Oversee purchase ledger and bank reconciliations, journal and nominal ledger administration, petty cash, banking.

Provide weekly debtor reporting and debt collection summaries to enable timely collection of fees.

Overseeing monthly balance sheet reconciliations (payroll, pensions, PAYE, NIC and auditor’s schedules) and month end journals.

Billing and revenues

Prepare pupils’ termly bills, working closely with colleagues to ensure new pupils, bursaries, scholarships and extras are billed accurately, and manage the process for the timely collection of all fees and extras, including the operation of the school’s direct debit scheme. Oversee the management of pupil deposits.

Liaising and working with the school’s third party debt collection agency as required.

Ensuring that other income streams, such as those from lettings, donations and fund raising are collected, acknowledged and recorded in the appropriate way.

Preparing submissions to the local authorities to claim Early Years Entitlement.

Assisting staff in assessing the correct costings for school trips and preparing a financial review once completed.

Payroll

Pro-actively carry out payroll reconciliations and journals for payroll (payroll prepared externally).

Prepare annual pay increment schedules, detailing teacher progression through pay scales.
