Visiting Research Fellow for South Asia, Strategic Affairs (India)

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a defence and security think tank that has a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and geo-economics in a global context. Its international researchers provide best-in-class independent and impartial analysis and provide insights on strategic challenges and priorities to governments and the private sector. It is expert at bringing together national leaders and senior policymakers in foreign policy, defence and security; promoting dialogue; and facilitating effective and influential bilateral and multilateral consultations.
An opportunity has arisen at The International Institute for Strategic Studies, in London, for a Visiting Research Fellow to work within the IISS South and Central Asian Defence, Strategy and Diplomacy Programme.
The selected individual will work closely with senior researchers in the Programme.
- Research and publication on India nuclear and strategic affairs.
- Lecturing for and on behalf of IISS on India’s nuclear and strategic matters.
- Presenting research on India’s nuclear and strategic matters to specific external audiences, including universities.
- Participation in related public events on India’s nuclear and strategic affairs in the UK.
- Support for the organisation of a ‘track 1.5’ workshop on nuclear and strategic affairs in 2026.
- Relationship building between UK and Indian government personnel.
This position should appeal to individuals who have:
- Published expertise or proven experience in or formerly with the Indian armed forces or the government of India’s nuclear and strategic affairs institutions. This would include issues of nuclear and strategic stability; doctrinal and strategic capability issues; non-proliferation; arms control; defence, emerging technologies and deterrence; and nuclear security.
- An undergraduate and preferably postgraduate degree relating to strategic studies, military affairs, international relations or a related field, including in relevant science and engineering.
