Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic supportive experienced individual to join the Medical Outpatient Team in a Healthcare Assistant role. The post holder will welcome patients into the department and record any observations/ interventions required prior to their outpatient appointment. The post holder will also support with reception cover in the absence of the regular receptionist.

The department is located in suite 4 and is open Monday - Friday 08:00 - 17:30

Main duties of the job

Contributes to the delivery of outstanding patient care by:
Demonstrating a caring approach to patients and relatives who attend the department and ensure 
that dignity and respect are maintained at all times. Maintaining a clean safe environment for our patients to receive care in.
 Ensuring confidentiality is maintained at all times.
Using patient/carers feedback to implement improvements that positively impact their care

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE standard (or equivalent), to include Maths & English
  • QCF level 2 Clinical Healthcare Support or willing to work towards and complete within 12 months
  • Care Certificate (or willing to work towards)
Desirable criteria
  • Health Related Training, First Aid, Moving & Handling, Food Handling.
  • NVQ care qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as a HCA in a NHS Hospital Setting or GP Practice
  • Understands the needs for confidentiality
  • Understands and committed to providing high quality care to patients, relatives/ carers.
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant clerical experience
  • Use of telephone in a busy environment
  • Computer experience (e.g., Word/Excel and other packages) as well as email systems and other electronic media

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate a caring approach to patients & relatives & works so that patients’ dignity & respect is maintained at all times
  • Able to communicate routine information including observations effectively verbally & written to staff, patients/relatives.
  • Able to prioritise own workload.
  • Able to work under own initiative within boundaries of role. Demonstrates awareness of importance of working as part of a team.
Desirable criteria
  • Record patient observations
  • Demonstratable HCA experience
  • Basic understanding of nursing practice & code of conduct
  • Able to access Medway and admit/ discharge patients
  • VDU/Keyboard skills

Personal Attributes

Essential criteria
  • Flexible in working across medical outpatient areas to support the service (early and late shifts) and there is an expectation for successful applicant to stay if clinics run over time
  • Able to move (manual handling) patients & equipment e.g. patient hoists, commodes, wheelchairs etc.
  • Able to deal with exposure to bereavement & ‘difficult’ patients & relatives

Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
