The PCC of St Peter De Beauvoir Town wish to engage a consultant(s) to prepare an outline 10-year Business Plan as part of the delivery of the ‘Transforming’ project.
Background
St Peter De Beauvoir Town is a Grade II listed church in London. It is the only Victorian space of its size in the area, built in the Gothic Revival style in 1841. It is notable for its gallery design and its pew architecture, comprising both Victorian open pews and Georgian-style box pews. It is still a landmark building at the centre of the estate and in the conservation area.
The Church is a warm hub, and hosts community, heritage and cultural events including Black History Month activities, art exhibitions, community activities, and film screenings. The Shoreditch Trust which supports vulnerable and disadvantaged people uses the Church as a venue for their activities and other local groups including Migrants Organise, and young creatives have expressed an interest in using the Church as a venue.
However, the Church is limited in fulfilling its potential due to the poor condition of the fabric and issues with access. Repairs are required to make the building safe and fit for purpose. These include works to the stone Tower finials (at risk of falling, and therefore also a safety risk); repointing of the South East Tower spire and North chancel spire, the chimney shafts, and the Church and boundary walls; and some internal repairs to floorboards, electrics and the Choir Stalls. Work is also needed to substantially increase capacity in the gallery. It needs additional support to increase the potential load, and the gallery rail is below modern tip height so the gallery is currently partly unusable.
Access is an urgent issue. Alongside this there is a need to ensure that the Church is more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable as well as more financially resilient.
Our project will establish what the community wants and what the building needs.
Requirement
The overall objective is to ensure that the future delivery of the Business Plan leads to greater resilience for the PCC, and the long-term inclusive sustainability of the historic church. Our aim is for the Business Plan to provide a robust delivery model that meets local need and maximises opportunities. There is an expectation for seeking future funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a capital project (largely around access works, but some conservation works, too). As such, it is anticipated that the Business Plan will be developed further with that funding, but the outline business plan must still be robust enough to support the next funding application.
