Job Overview

The Caretaker & Maintenance Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, security,
and upkeep of the School’s buildings and grounds. Working as part of a cohesive Estate
team, the post holder will demonstrate a strong work ethic and a proactive approach to
maintaining high standards across the School’s facilities.

Duties and
Responsibilities:

Security & Access



Lock up all School buildings each evening, ensuring alarms are set and access is
managed for lettings and contractors.

  Operate the School’s access and security systems.
  Respond appropriately to burglar and fire alarms, including contacting emergency

services and logging incidents.

Maintenance & Repairs

  Address requests related to heating, electrical systems, drainage, kitchen equipment,
pests, etc. Escalate unresolved issues to the Estate Manager or relevant contractors.

  Assist with emergency lighting tests and conduct regular gas and electricity meter

readings.
Support general building maintenance, including:



Internal and external repairs
o
o  Basic plumbing and drainage
o  General carpentry tasks

  Operate maintenance machinery and report any defects promptly.
  Assist with the upkeep of the School’s two swimming pools.

Events & Facilities Support

  Provide support for School events (e.g. Sports Day, Prize Giving, Bonfire Night),

including marshalling and general setup.

  Assist with scenery setup for performances.
  Move furniture and equipment to support School operations and activities.
  Provide access and security support for external lettings.

Grounds & Transport

  Carry out general grounds tasks when not engaged in caretaking or maintenance

duties.

  Drive School minibuses and other vehicles as required.

Compliance & Safety

  Ensure all work is completed in line with relevant risk assessments and method

statements.

  Maintain high standards of Health & Safety and adhere to Child Safeguarding

procedures.

  Provide occasional evening and weekend support for School events (overtime agreed

in advance unless in emergencies).

Other Duties

  Carry out any other reasonable tasks as directed by the Estate Manager or Director

of Finance and Operations.

Keys Skills &
Knowledge:

Familiarity with computerised security systems.

  Previous caretaking or maintenance experience (training provided if not).
  Experience in general building maintenance.
  Proficient in using power tools and maintenance equipment.

  Ability to prioritise tasks and seek guidance when necessary.
Initiative and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

  Confidence in suggesting improvements to existing practices.
  Ability to meet deadlines and work under limited supervision.

Qualities:

  Honest, trustworthy, and reliable with a strong work ethic.
  Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  Willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Lives within a 5-mile radius of the School (or onsite accommodation available).

  Holds a full, clean driving licence (D1 entitlement preferred; support available to

obtain if needed).

  Willing to undertake role-specific training.

Probationary
Period

  This role is subject to a probationary period of 12 months from the start of

employment, and may be extended at the School’s discretion.

  Performance and suitability for continued employment will be reviewed throughout

the probationary period.
