Job Description

Responsible to:

Exams Officer, Head of Academic Programme

Hours of Work:

Start time during mock exams is usually 8am, start time during
summer GCSE / A Level exams may be from 7:45am. Invigilator finish
time may be anywhere between 3pm / 5pm, depending on the
length of the exam and the needs of the school. Mock exams take
place throughout the year, with formal exams mainly taking place
in May / June. It is expected that invigilators will be available for
mocks in December / January/ February/ March / April as well
formal exams in May / June.
Part time applications are welcome.

Salary:

£14.09 per hour including Holiday Pay as Standard Invigilator or
£15.45 per hour including holiday pay as Lead Invigilator

Introduction

Lewes Old Grammar School is an independent co-educational day school located in the
historic  county  town  of  Lewes,  educating  children  from  3  to  18  years  old.    The  School
encompasses traditional values combined with a forward approach to the education of
young  people,  and  it  is  proud  of  the  family  ethos  and  community  it  engenders.  First
established  in  1512, Lewes  Old  Grammar  School  combines high  educational standards
and small classes in a caring, well- mannered environment together with economic fee
levels.  There  is  an  extensive  program  of  extra-curricular  activities  running  on  Friday
afternoons for Yr 7-9 and many opportunities for students to take part in music and drama
activities.

Morley House caters for children from three years old until the age of ten, and is located
in  an  independent  building  in  a  pleasant  residential  area  of  Lewes.    The  Senior  School
occupies four architecturally  historic buildings  in  the  High  Street  of  the ancient  town  of
Lewes. Here we educate children from the age of 11, (Year 7), until 18 years of age, (Sixth
Form), and always feature well in the Sussex GCSE and A Level league tables.

Purpose of Job

To ensure the fair and proper conduct of examinations in an environment that enables a
student to perform at their best.

To support the Exams Officer with the day-to-day operation of examination venues. This
activity may include:

•  Assisting with setting up examination venues by laying out stationery, equipment and

examination papers in accordance with strict procedures;

•  Closely following and enforcing exam procedures and regulations;
•  Assisting candidates prior to the start of examinations by directing them to their seats

and advising them about possessions permitted in examination venues;

•  Ensuring that candidates do not talk once inside examination venues;
•

Invigilating during examinations, dealing with queries raised by candidates and
reporting any examination irregularities to the Lead Invigilator in accordance with
procedures. Please be aware, as per JCQ regulations, it is expected that Invigilators
will remain standing during exams and will walk up and down the aisles closely
monitoring students;

•  Acting as a Reader for students who are eligible for this access arrangement

(training will be given);

•  Checking attendance during examinations, and recording details of late arrivals;
•  Escorting candidates from venues during the examination as required and

supervising candidates whilst outside examination venues;

•  Escorting candidates on toilet breaks ensuring no unauthorised material is consulted

and that examination regulations are observed at all times;

•  Collecting, collating and delivering scripts at the end of the examination in

accordance with JCQ regulations and school procedures;

•  Supervising candidates leaving examination venues, ensuring that candidates do
not remove equipment or stationery from the venue without authorisation and
ensuring that candidates leave venues in an orderly and quiet manner.

•  We are especially keen to hear from applicants who would be willing to act as

Scribes (usually typing) for students with this access arrangement (after training).

To assist Exams Officer and other examinations staff with other examination processes. This
activity may include:

•  Assisting with the packing of examination papers, stationery (sometimes heavy) and

equipment prior to the examinations and the delivery to and from venues as
appropriate;

•  Occasionally there may be a requirement to move desks in classrooms.
•  Reading and/or scribing (writing or typing) for students with exam access

arrangements, (after appropriate training). For recruitment in August / September
2025 please note we are particularly looking for Invigilators who are keen to act as
Scribes (typing / writing depending on the exam).

Support for the School

•  Be  aware  of  and  comply  with  policies  and  procedures  relating  to  child  protection,
health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns
to an appropriate person;

•  Be  aware  of  and  support  difference  and  ensure  students  have  equal  access  to

opportunities to learn and develop;

•  Contribute to the overall ethos / work / aims of the school;
•  Appreciate and support the role of other professionals;
•  Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as
required. It is a JCQ requirement to complete comprehensive Invigilator training, as
directed by the Exams Officer;

•  Responsible for Health & Safety management in own area;
•  Ensure  the  effective  implementation  of  school  policies  with  particular  regard  to

safeguarding;

•  Carry out other duties that may reasonably be required by the Exams Officer.

that are broadly in line with the above responsibilities.

The school does not have a licence to sponsor migrants under the worker or temporary
