About the role

Citizens Advice, in partnership with The Trussell Trust, have been running the Help through Hardship Helpline (formerly the Trussell Trust Foodbank helpline) for just over a year. The helpline has been highly successful in reaching those clients most in need. Located just off the Woodstock Road at the northern end of the St John’s College Sports Ground with excellent transport links. The building has an external play area, facing out over the College sport fields, that is partly covered and can be used all year round. The Nursery is expected to care for approximately 26 children.
Reporting to the Nursery and Deputy Nursery Manager, the Nursery Assistant will work as a member of the nursery team to ensure that all children attending the setting receive high quality care, are kept safe and receive rich and stimulating play experiences. To be responsible for meeting the requirements of regulatory bodies with relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, Special Educational Needs, Safeguarding, Health and Safety and to ensure that the Bainton Road Nursery policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.

About The Elms
The Elms is a large two-storey house within the Ravenswood Estate, home to six residents aged in their 60s and 70s with mild to moderate neurodevelopmental disabilities, including learning disabilities, and additional needs such as autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, dementia, and mobility challenges. Most residents are verbal, using clear speech, facial expressions, or visual prompts to communicate.
Residents enjoy a relaxed, social lifestyle with hobbies including arts and crafts, knitting, music, TV, and trips to coffee shops. Some are sociable; others prefer a quieter routine. The house includes self-contained flats, a dedicated arts room, and a garden with countryside views.
Support is provided 24/7 with a 3-week rota pattern and most shifts running 07:00 to 21:00. As with all Norwood services, the people we support lead the way, the rota flexes to fit their needs, not the other way around. You’ll be joining a stable and values-led team committed to Kindness, Respect, Belonging, and Empowerment.
Your Day-to-Day
Your role will be varied and active. You’ll:
• Support people with personal care, mobility, mealtimes, and routines
• Help people enjoy their hobbies and community outings
• Support with household tasks and medication
• Promote independence and choice
• Use a variety of communication approaches to build trust
• Drive the home vehicle for appointments and leisure (if you’re a driver)
Experience, Qualifications & Training
Essential:
• Experience supporting older adults with learning disabilities or autism
• Awareness of safeguarding and person-led support
• Able to commit to full-time hours, including weekends
Desirable:
• Experience with epilepsy, dementia, mobility needs, or behaviours that challenge
• Moving and handling training
• Full, clean UK driving licence

The Department of Sociology and Social Policy brings together scholars with international research experience and publication records in the major areas of Sociology and Social Policy. Over the years, our faculty members have been the recipients of the University’s Research Excellence Award and Teaching Excellence Award. The Department offers undergraduate teaching in Sociology, Social and Public Policy, and Health and Social Services Management, while hosting an MSocSc Programme in Comparative Social Policy (International) (IMCSP). We have been consistently successful in attracting MPhil and PhD students from around the world, particularly the recipients of the Hong Kong RGC Junior Research Fellow Scheme, and obtaining the General Research Fund (GRF) and other external competitive grants. General Requirements
Applicants should have a PhD degree in Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work, Health Studies or other related disciplines, with relevant teaching experience. Excellent communication and presentation skills in English are essential. The appointee should be able to take up teaching duties in some of the courses on the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) Programme, including but not limited to: “Introduction to Health and Social Care”, “Fundraising and Programme Evaluation”, “Health and Social Service Provisions for Special Populations”, “Health and Social Service Project” and “Social Innovation & Social Enterprises”. The appointee should be prepared to actively support the coordination and development of our teaching programmes.

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
