This nature recovery role is an exciting opportunity to lead on management of the Trust’s 15 nature reserves including a number of SSSIs and ancient woodlands including the award-winning Centenary Riverside Local Nature Reserve and the stunning Wyming Brook (SSSI).
You will need to be passionate about nature recovery with a good practical understanding of species and habitat conservation and how to deliver it. Qualified to post graduate levels with over 5-years relevant experience you will lead, manage and develop the nature reserves team. This will include day-to-day responsibility for seven of the Trust’s reserves, including liaison with our land management and evidence teams and community wildlife rangers.
The Senior Nature Recovery Manager is responsible for directly managing a suite of seven Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust (SRWT) nature reserves across the local nature recovery network and the management of the wider nature reserves team. There is a wide range of technical nature recovery work to manage, with a substantial degree of autonomy. The wider team includes land management team officers, community wildlife rangers, an ecological monitoring officer and a large number of volunteers.
The successful candidate will have:
● At least 5+ years substantial and relevant experience of ecology and environmental conservation.
● Substantial experience of project development and land management.
● Experience of raising funds from government, local authority and other sources.
● Substantial experience of working with local people including volunteers and trainees, as well as public and private sector partners.
● Experience of staff and budget management.
● Experience of staff recruitment and employment.
● Experience of developing policies and procedures.

Field Conservation Industry Placement – Full-time industrial placement commencing September 2026.
Are you excited by the prospect of gaining invaluable work experience with one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections?
This placement will provide experience within our 'Field Programme’ and ‘Policy’ Departments at Chester Zoo, which facilitate, coordinate and develop global field conservation projects, with a placement focus on field conservation projects and deforestation free commodities.
What you’ll be doing…
• Assisting with the day-to-day coordination of our Field Projects and our Sustainable Palm Oil Campaign projects
• Provide support across Chester Zoos international and UK conservation work and assist on our Sustainable Palm Oil Campaign projects.
• Experience collecting, handling and processing field data, including camera trap data, survey data and analysis
• Assisting with the research and processing of data for the PalmOil Scan app
• Assisting with reporting project outcomes, writing summary articles and documents for a range of stakeholders, potentially including the opportunity to be part of peer-reviewed publications
• Opportunity to contribute to partnership activities, such as IUCN SSC Specialist Groups, policy partners from certification bodies to industry stakeholders, and local community partners
The Work Placement

Our Requirements
• A passion for in-situ biodiversity conservation, demonstrated through previous work experience and related study

This opportunity is only available to those studying at a UK university on a degree programme with an industrial year.
This is a full-time voluntary position for a minimum of 9 months, commencing September 2026.
This role is a desk-based placement at Chester Zoo with no overseas travel. There may be an opportunity for a hybrid working from home arrangement.
Although no direct zoo animal contact takes place in this role, you will attend monthly workshops to gain wider knowledge of modern zoo management.

Commitment: Once every 2-4 weeks for half a day.
Location: Near Ashburton, Devon
We are looking for a reliable and compassionate volunteer to help keep our aviaries clean, safe, and comfortable for the owls in our care. This is a hands-on role that genuinely makes a difference to the welfare of these beautiful birds.
What the role involves:
- Cleaning aviaries – including perching areas, water bowls and feeding stations
- Some basic maintenance tasks if possible
- Working quietly and calmly around birds
- Supporting the wider conservation work of the Trust
What we’re looking for:
- Someone reliable, practical, and comfortable working outdoor
- Reasonable physical fitness
- A gentle, respectful approach to wildlife
- Ability to commit to one session every two weeks

Are you organised, friendly, and keen to make a real difference? We’re a small conservation charity with a big mission, and we’re looking for one or two enthusiastic Admin volunteers to help keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. You’ll be supporting our everyday processes; from bulk scanning and making phone enquiries to packaging up our sales items. No previous admin or conservation experience is needed; we’ll provide all the training and support you need. All we ask is for a few hours of your time every couple of weeks, and we can be completely flexible around your availability! Volunteering
Volunteers are vital!Weekly Volunteers generally come in 1 or 2 days a week, covering tasks such as aviary cleaning, car cleaning, woodwork, fieldwork, and grounds maintenance.Monthly Volunteers join in with monthly conservation tasks in our nature reserve (The Lennon Legacy Project), or office admin.Seasonal Conservation Work: Come and join our Conservation Team for a day doing practical work in our Lennon Legacy Project wildlife haven, which is managed for Barn Owls and other wildlife. Usually once a month.
See: Conservation Days for more information.Special Task Volunteers who come in less often to help with things like newsletter mailings, demolition jobs, or helping out at events. We also have a list of ‘owl transport volunteers’ who we can call on if an injured owl needs collecting or taking to the vets.

Our ideal Assistant Conservation Officer applicant…
Has a keen long-term interest in owls and a passion for Barn Owl conservation. Be actively involved in nature conservation and have carried out practical tasks to encourage wildlife. In handling live wild birds they will be both confident and gentle.
They will have wide-ranging skills including creative writing, public speaking, DIY/woodwork, and practical land management. They will be very good with computers (especially database, email and website work) and happy to sit in front of one most of the time. They will be physically fit and keen on outdoor work in all weathers – even up a ladder! They will be interested in people and will enjoy talking about owls, nestboxes, habitats, and the Trust’s work.
They will be able to give inspirational presentations and will display genuine enthusiasm for Barn Owls and a deep knowledge of farmland bird conservation.
They will be just as happy talking to well-informed professionals as getting down on their knees to entertain and inform nursery school children.
