The Family Support Manager is a key staff role which involves working with families and facilitating support from volunteers recruited from the local church and community.
You would work as part of the North West team which includes Lancashire, Sefton, Knowsley & St Helens, and you will need to be able to travel and work predominantly across Lancashire. You would be involved from initial referral from school or Local Authority, through to official completion of Safe Families’ support, including risk assessment of a family situation, identifying goals, matching and introducing volunteers, providing on-going mentoring and support to volunteers and assessing when outcomes have been achieved. Your objective is to help support families navigate challenging circumstances through connecting them into local volunteer based, sustainable support.
The role requires experience of working with children, families or other vulnerable groups, and knowledge and application of safeguarding principles and processes. It is an incredibly exciting role where you would have the privilege of seeing how the simplest of actions, often from dedicated volunteers, really can bring hope and transformation to families and care leavers.

The service provides high support housing to service users with enduring mental health backgrounds. The service consists of 8 flats and offers a full recovery and rehabilitation package to our service users.
We aim to support and assess on-going needs of our service users to build on their existing skills while learning new ones. All service users are allocated to a named Support Worker. Service users are required to fully participate in the process of planning their care, which includes attending support/key work sessions with staff; this time is for clients to discuss any issues or areas of concern they may have, or perhaps go out for a coffee/trip to local activities, or be supported with a practical task in their flat such as cleaning or laundry.
Role Responsibility
You will provide recovery focused support to service users in accordance with their support plans. You will have well-honed skills in positive communication, engagement, and will be able to demonstrate unconditional positive regard for service users.
You will have the maturity to work within a positive framework supporting clients. You will have the ability to deliver services and interventions in a person centred, non-judgmental manner, and recovery-based way.
You will work alongside members of the service user’s circle of support, to enable individuals to be happy, healthy, and successful in achieving their life goals.
Your typical duties will include:
- providing support and guidance to service users
- administering medication
- daily record keeping and incident report writing
- running group activities
- help with inducting new staff members
- upholding the cleanliness of the service to adhere to infection prevention control measures
The Ideal Candidate
Previous experience in the mental health sector is desirable but not essential. What is important is that you have a genuine desire to support individuals in their recovery and have a can-do attitude.
We need compassionate, proactive and professional individuals who are highly motivated, hardworking and keen to support service users with mental health and complex care needs. Being a good communicator is essential, to be able to get on with people of all ages and from all backgrounds, and you will also be liaising with other professionals.

You will be working closely with the Service Manager, Coordinator and Medway Children’s Services to provide a safe, happy and positive experience for families, children and young people who have been referred to the service. You will provide Supervised Family Time for those referred to the service by their Social Workers and will provide a safe and welcoming environment where families are able to build trusting relationships and where appropriate receive support, advice and guidance.
We are looking for Supervisors to work across weekdays, early evenings and Saturdays on a permanent basis, however we are always interested in talking to anyone interested in sessional work.
Main Responsibilities:
• To support the delivery of safe and effective supervised Family Time sessions.
• To promote and maintain Family Time arrangements that are agreed between all parties, including respecting the wishes of children and young people.
• To ensure you have an understanding of, and comply with, Family Action’s procedures for promoting and safeguarding the welfare and safety of children and vulnerable adults, undertaking risk assessments before each session ensuring that the risks identified by Social Workers are mitigated.
• To ensure that all supervised Family Time sessions are managed to ensure as positive experience for the children and young people as possible.
• To recognise any risks of harm and intervene appropriately to de-escalate the risks or bring in additional support as required to safeguard the children.
• To keep records of your work using Family Action systems, adhere to confidentiality, information sharing protocols and risk assessment processes.
Main Requirements (for details check the job description and person specification):
• Educated to level two or above (or working towards) with experience of or a recognised professional qualification in social work, health, education, early years, youth work or equivalent, and evidence of a commitment to continuing learning and professional development.
• The ability to work with families in conflict and the importance of remaining impartial, objective and focused on the needs of the child/children at all times.
• Understanding of child development, attachment and appropriate parenting approaches.
• The ability to demonstrate an understanding of safe working practices, risk assessment and risk management.
• Excellent verbal, listening and written skills, including basic IT skills.
• Good planning and excellent report writing and record keeping skills. Experience of and ability to use MS Office applications and electronic recording systems.
• The ability to priorities and organise workload effectively including the timely completion and submission of case records and reports.
• Understanding of the needs of families / individuals, and of the impact of disadvantage and social exclusion and a commitment to and willingness to promote inclusion and equality of opportunity for all.
• Ability to align with and support Family Action’s mission and values.
