Summary of Role

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) is seeking to appoint two freelance Assessors to assess learner work for the Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) – Unit 5: Child Development. This is a self-employed, remote contractor role, working variable hours during set assessment windows across the academic year.

Contract type: Self-employed contract on freelance basis
Location: Remote
Hours: Variable; must be available during all assessment windows (three per academic year)
Rate: £38.43 per hour
Standardisation: Up to 3 days per year (mandatory; unpaid)

Key areas and responsibilities

Assess written learner evidence for Unit 5: Child Development in accordance with ISTD standards, assessment criteria, learning objectives, and marking guidance.
Provide clear, constructive feedback and submit marks/reports in the agreed format and within designated timescales.
Work closely with the Lead Assessor and ISTD Quality Assurance team; act on QA feedback and promptly address any notified errors.
Maintain accurate assessment/achievement records and retain assessment notes for six months for verification, then securely destroy in line with GDPR requirements.
Apply reasonable adjustments as notified by the Quality Assurance team.
Identify and report any potential malpractice or irregularities in assessments.
Attend annual professional development and standardisation meetings to ensure consistent assessment decisions.
Always maintain confidentiality and declare any conflicts of interest relating to candidates, Approved Dance Centres, or Tutors.

Person specification

Essential

A recognised degree in dance education or child development (dance-related subject).
Minimum three years’ experience teaching dance education and/or child development in dance at Level 4 or higher.
Demonstrable advanced knowledge of child development in dance education (e.g., lecturing, publications, conference/webinar leadership).
Experience of assessing and marking written work at Level 4 or higher (preferably for a regulated qualification).
Commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity within assessment processes.
Effective time management, reliability, and the ability to meet agreed deadlines.

Desired but not essential:

Master’s degree in dance education or child development in a dance-related subject.
Additional languages, fluency in Italian or Greek.
