The Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) is Britain’s leading regeneration agency dedicated to Coalfield Communities. Since 1999, we have awarded over £100 million in grants. However, we are far more than a grant maker and we are increasingly taking a pro-active approach to developing and investing in strategic programmes to address regeneration issues. In fact, CRT has always prided itself as being more than a funder often supporting groups and communities in ways that do not involve grant funding such as training, facilitation, mentoring, advising, supporting, brokering and being a trusted friend. CRT has a constituency of supporting communities, groups and partners which places it in a unique position to help communities develop community regeneration projects.
Role
The CRT Game On Development Officer will support the CRT Game On England Development Manager in delivering and expanding the Game On programme within coalfield communities.
This role will involve:
Programme Delivery & Co-ordination
- Organise and oversee weekly sports sessions, events, and training initiatives.
- Ensure all sessions align with the programme’s key missions: Community, Health and Skills, as well as community needs.
- Promote a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
- Report the impact of the programme through completing various administration tasks including but not limited to uploading and populating session registers.
- Monitor and evaluate programme outcomes, providing feedback for continuous improvement.
- Support development of new initiatives that respond to community needs.
- Identify opportunities to expand the reach and impact of the programme.
- Contribute ideas to improve programme delivery and engagement.
Community Engagement & Relationships
- Work closely with community and grassroots organisations’ to identify local needs and build meaningful relationships that support co-delivery opportunities. This collaborative approach will ensure the programme remains responsive and relevant to the communities it serves.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local stakeholders, participants and partners.
- Act as a point of contact for community members, offering guidance and support.
- Engage with a variety of audiences, including young people, families, and local leaders to promote participation and inclusivity.
Additionally, the role will involve helping to maintain high-quality standards by: following established processes; reviewing programme documents annually with the Development Manager, and suggesting improvements in line with the document control procedure. As well as adhering to data protection processes and ensuring safeguarding policies and procedures are followed.
Please note the Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals; all staff must ensure that the highest priority is given to following the guidance and regulations to safeguard children/young people and adults at risk. This role is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Investigating the bone marrow niche dynamics during clonal haematopoiesis
Key information
Research topics
This is a summer student position supervised by Despoina Papazoglou in Dominique Bonnet's lab.
Introduction to the science
In the Bonnet lab, we study how human blood stem cells (called haematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs) work in both healthy people and in blood cancers such as acute myeloid leukaemia. We don’t just focus on the stem cells themselves — we also look at the support cells around them, known as stromal cells. These stromal cells reside in the bone marrow “niche,” the environment that surrounds and influences HSCs. By understanding both the stem cells and their supporting environment, we aim to learn how normal blood formation works and how it goes wrong in cancer.
About the project
During my postdoctoral research, I am investigating a biological process known as clonal haematopoiesis (CH). In CH, a subset of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) acquires somatic mutations that give these cells a growth advantage over non-mutated (wild-type) HSCs. CH is associated with an increased risk of developing haematological malignancies and other conditions, such as cardiovascular disease. However, many individuals with CH never develop these disorders, and the reasons for these different outcomes remain unclear.
A major unanswered question is how mutant HSCs expand and, importantly, how their presence influences other cell types within the bone marrow. My work focuses on mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), a key stromal population that plays essential roles in supporting normal haematopoiesis.
To study these interactions, we have established a three-dimensional humanised scaffold model that enables investigation of human CH in vivo. The scaffolds are seeded with HSCs and MSCs and then implanted into mice. After three months, we retrieve the scaffolds and analyse them using flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, and immunofluorescent staining. Although we have preliminary data on the cell populations present, we still lack a detailed understanding of the architecture of these niches and the spatial organisation of the various cell types.
The summer student will contribute to this work by developing multiplex imaging approaches, alongside learning cell culture and flow cytometry. The overall aim of their project will be to characterise the presence and spatial distribution of multiple stromal cell types within our human bone marrow model and to compare these features under healthy versus CH/mutant conditions.
Candidate background
The post holder should embody and demonstrate the Crick ethos and ways of working: bold, open and collegial. The candidate must be registered at a UK Higher Education Institution, studying in the UK and must have completed a minimum of two years’ undergraduate study in a relevant discipline, and on track to receive a final degree grade of 2:1 or 1. In addition, they should be able demonstrate the following experience and key competencies:
- This project would suit a student that is studying biomedical sciences, and has an interest in cell biology, cancer biology or stem cell biology. The project will be lab based, with some time dedicated to analysis and data presentation.
- Good knowledge in relevant scientific area(s)
- Good written and spoken communication skills
- Ability to work independently and also capable of interacting within a group

About CaSE
Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE) exists to advocate for UK R&D, for the benefit of lives and livelihoods.
We are a charity and the leading independent voice for UK R&D, supported by a diverse membership of businesses, universities, professional bodies, research charities and individuals. Our organisational members span discovery research, science, engineering and innovation across the public, private, and charitable sectors.
We collaborate with our members, partners and the public to lend our expert voice to decisions about R&D. We specialise in developing non-partisan, responsive solutions that help R&D to thrive in ways that improve people’s lives and livelihoods.
CaSE is a small organisation that has a big impact. Recent projects have included exploring a public-led vision for the future of R&D in the UK, understanding how R&D can build stronger links with communities, highlighting the role of R&D in the Government’s five missions, mapping out the future of R&D in universities, and bringing R&D to the attention of politicians during the 2024 General Election campaign. CaSE maintains an active media presence and hosts events, such as our flagship Annual Lecture.
Our website offers more information on CaSE’s Purpose and Values, and our Board.

Trinity Church, Abingdon, welcomed people from across England and Wales on Saturday 10 January as the Revd Wayne Hawkins was inducted as Oxfordshire Ecumenical Minister for the URC Wessex Synod.
The Revd Dr Michael Hopkins, Moderator of Wessex Synod, led the service with contributions from ministers and church leaders from across the county.
In her sermon, the Revd Dr Susan Durber, URC minister and European President of the World Council of Churches, reflected on the ecumenical movement and Abingdon’s long tradition of churches working together. She recalled the progress in ecumenical cooperation, especially during the 1980s when new forms of partnership emerged and the URC was formed through the coming together of different traditions. Today, she said, people are far more familiar with one another’s church practices, but that has not yet led to the kind of deep structural unity seen in those earlier years.
Drawing on the readings from Philippians 2: 5-11 and John 13:34-35, Susan spoke of Jesus’ command to love one another, stressing that love is not just a feeling but something practical and lived out day by day. True unity, she suggested, grows when Christians commit themselves to love in their relationships with one another within and across churches.
During the service Revd Wayne Hawkins affirmed his faith and his commitment to serve the local ecumenical partnership (LEP) churches of Oxfordshire in this ecumenical role in helping them in their missions to their communities. Representatives of LEPs, Wessex Synod and the wider church formally welcomed him and promised their support and prayers.
The service concluded with prayers for the churches and the world, by Canon Neil Roberts, Rector of St Nicolas Church, Guildford. He was sorry to lose Wayne who had been a fellow minister in Guildford but said people in Oxfordshire would be blessed through his work in this new ecumenical role.
